About the Item
During the COVID-19 lockdown, many faced swirling negative thoughts….. Atlanta sculptor, Eileen Braun, worked through the lockdown challenge and re-channeled that negative energy into her hands. As her hands cradled and examined the materials, her mind welcomed being in the moment and being grateful for what was. Those positive thoughts became her mantra while creating. Accepting change without judgement. On occasion, accepting the days that didn’t change, while the materials spoke anew.
She explains that “the resulting forms display my interwoven emotions: quiet, complex, absorbed, relaxed, serious, playful, flirtatious, mothering, smothering and ultimately, joyful.”
Her installation, OPEN SPACES: Espaces Ouverts, is a profusion of forms suspended in our two front facing plaza windows. As they float, sight lines shift constantly changing your focus. The changing perspectives invite closer examination, opening paths to reflection. Ms. Braun embraces natural materials (rattan reed, encaustic wax and cotton string) to create sculptures which are seen as line drawings in open space. They move as soundless ballerinas preforming a modern dance, their shadows climb the walls and skim the floor.

Eileen Braun
Eileen Braun’s work is heavily influenced by her interest in nurture and science. As a child, she listened to dinnertime conversations that were a blend of her mother’s attending to the growing family's needs and her father’s sharing updates from the scientific research community. Her current sculptural work in many ways blends these two. She creates biomorphic forms that appear to be communicating human-like emotional needs. Although the work is 3D they are very much drawings in space. The shadows they cast are informed by the often changing light passing through them, changing one’s perception of space. Like her father before her, Eileen delights in experimenting with materials, often surprising viewers with the lightness of seemingly much heavier sculptures. A native of Massachusetts, Eileen Braun began formal fine-art training began at C. W. Post College (Long Island, New York) and continued at Indiana University (Bloomington) where she was awarded a B. A. degree in Sculpture and Education. Her ceramics training was acquired at local Arts Centers and Regional Workshops. Ms. Braun taught in public schools, served as Executive Director of a suburban New York Arts Center, and also worked as a Museum Giftshop Buyer and Manager. A full-time artist, Ms. Braun completes the majority of her work in her Atlanta, Georgia studio.

Large Sculpture: 'Lady Whistlesdown Baggage Cart' : Emotional Baggage Cart
By Theda Sandiford
Located in New York, NY
My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints.
Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape.
For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it.
