Woodcutter and Runaway

2020

About the Item

Artist Commentary: Woodcutter and Runaway consists of three carved log figures in a rectangular wood structure. There is a male log figure (the woodcutter) on tree stump pedestal. He is holding up a baby log figure. There is a tilted bas-relief, a female figure made from a split, hollowed-out log; she is held up by metal rods and is part of the back wall of the structure. The structure has a "window," a wood frame held up by metal rods, through which you can see the woodcutter figure. This multi-sculpture piece is meant to evoke a narrative that one would find in a traditional folk tale. Notes: The images of this piece shown in a natural landscape suggest a folk tale narrative that would take place in a forest. However, it can be exhibited indoors. The main figure (Woodcutter) can be exhibited by itself. Keywords: figurative carved wood pieces with cedar housing structure
