Waxing Crescent by Guy Allen is a limited edition of the moon. This piece is part of Guy's moon series.
Accomplished print maker Guy Allen (b.1987) grew up surrounded by Norfolk’s natural beauty. The theme of the animal world is central to Guy’s work and inspiration. His limited edition original etchings showcase his brilliant draftsmanship in a contemporary way. Guy graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 2011, but discovered his passion for the traditional etching process while studying at the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2010. In 2012 Guy trained as an assistant print maker at the highly respected Curwen Studios, Cambridge, under Mary Dalton and Stanley Jones, where he mastered other types of printmaking. Today Guy works as a full time artist, splitting his week between his London and Norfolk studios, accompanied by trusty wire haired dachshund, Loaf. To create his pieces, Guy marries the traditional technique of etching with timeless subject matter and print making processes, for a more contemporary twist. The stages involved in creating these original prints include etching, aquatint, screen print and lithography. Guy has adopted a unique approach to etching by using a stippling effect on the plate, a labour intensive pointillist technique which gives the images a detailed finish and highlights his skill in freeform drawing and etching. The horseracing world particularly inspires Guy – he delights in the technical skill required to capture horses’ musculature and movement. Most recently, one of Guy’s etchings, ‘Horse Study Blue’, was awarded runner up at the Society of Equestrian Artists Summer Exhibition at the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art in Newmarket. Guy's work was exhibited in the prestigious Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in 2013 and 2014, and shortlisted in 2016. He has exhibited internationally in Dubai and New York, and is popular at London's major art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair. His work is housed in private collections in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong.Guy is represented by a number of galleries throughout the UK.

Guy Allen
Guy Allen is an experimental printmaker, exceptional draftsman and highly talented young British artist. Working hard between his studios in London and Norfolk, Guy’s trademark experimental approach to printmaking presents an exciting mix of colour, gold-leaf and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etchings.Studying at Central St Martins from 2008 – 2011 Guy discovered the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation. He has never looked back. Growing up in Norfolk, the countryside and his love of animals have had a lasting impact on Guy’s work. Regularly returning to his Norfolk roots to gather his thoughts and inspiration, his subjects are drawn directly from the Norfolk countryside and are all native species to the land he has known since childhood. This inspiration and drive to create is fuelled ever further by Guy’s love of the printing press. With distinctive style, striking ability and total commitment Guy has mastered his printing-making techniques. Constantly exploring the infinite possibilities and opportunities the medium offers, he breathes new life into traditional techniques and subject matter. Guy also has a huge philanthropic interest and supports many arts charities each year including Art For Youth, EACH, Keeping A Breast, Art For Cure and Well Child.

Robert Cottingham
B. 1935, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
Born in 1935 in Brooklyn, Robert Cottingham is known for his paintings and prints of urban American landscapes, particularly building facades, neon signs, movie marquees, and shop fronts. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1955 through 1958, he earned a BFA at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, in 1963. Cottingham began his professional artistic career as an art director for the advertising firm Young and Rubicam in the early 1960s. Although he is typically associated with Photorealism, Cottingham never considered himself a Photorealist, but rather a realist painter working in a long tradition of American vernacular scenes. In this respect, his work often draws parallels to a number of American painters such as Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Edward Hopper, and Charles Sheeler.
Cottingham’s interest in the intersections of art and commerce derive from his career as an adman and the influence of Pop art. Many of his paintings convey an interest in typography and lettering, as well as an awareness of the psychological impact of certain isolated words and letters. In his facades, techniques from advertising, namely cropping and enlarging, often produce words of enigmatic or comical resonance such as “Art,” “Ha,” or “Oh.” Cottingham’s enlarged sense of scale is reminiscent of James Rosenquist’s work, while his interest in text suggests the influence of Robert Indiana and Jasper Johns. In general, Cottingham viewed his work as continuing the legacy of Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, who also had a background in advertising.
In 1964, Cottingham relocated to Los Angeles for work. There, inspired by the drastically different environment of the West Coast metropolis, he began to commit seriously to painting. Fascinated by Hollywood’s exaggerated glitz and the downtrodden atmosphere of the downtown, Cottingham saw in Los Angeles the relics of a bygone commercial heyday and desired to capture its kitschy and uncanny atmosphere, bathed in the near perpetual sunlight of Southern California.
In 1968, Cottingham ended his advertising career in order to devote all his time to painting. In the late 1960s, he started using photography in his practice, first as an initial reference point for his process. After selecting a photograph, he translates it into black-and-white drawings by projecting the image onto gridded paper...

White Hamburgh Grape: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
By George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "White Hamburgh Grape", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 60 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a cluster of pale green grapes still on the vine. The vine and leaves are shown in attractive shades of green and brown. The plant lays on a brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There is a light brown title rectangle in the lower center which is blank, suggesting this may be a more rare preproduction proof. There are wide white margins.
This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick light beige mat. The frame measures 26" high, 22" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a tiny spot in the lower margin on the left and another in the left margin. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition.
There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...
