Christine So
Bay Laurel Diptych (Hand-printed cyanotype, 40 x 52 inches combined)

2024

About the Item

These are two separate 40 x 26 inch cyanotypes (unique monotypes) made using the same tree branches flipped over facing the opposite direction, the result being a symmetrical mirror image. The pale blue leaves of the right panel are a bit paler than the leaves of the left panel. While the two prints are symmetrical, they are not identical. Every botanical cyanotype made by this artist is unique, made using freshly-cut plants and tree branches laid in that exact composition on the hand-coated light-sensitive paper only once then exposed to sunlight. These are branches of a native California Bay Laurel tree which grows all over the hills east of San Francisco. Images of the prints framed are just to give a sense of how much wall they would cover once framed with a gap between them. The width of each 26" wide print would increase to at least 30 inches once framed, so the span is over 60 inches (5 feet or 180cm) when including a gap between the two panels. On heavy 100% cotton Arches watercolor paper. Deckled edges which look nice if float framed without a mat. SHIPPING: Free shipping to United States, Europe, UK in a wide tube. Both monotypes will ship rolled together in one 6-inch wide (15cm) heavy cardboard tube. On heavy 100% cotton Arches watercolor paper. Deckled edges which look nice if float framed without a mat. The background is a deep indigo and the leaves are a pale greenish blue. Unframed. Signed on the back by the artist.

Artwork shipped carefully rolled and packaged in a tube. WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE? The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's. Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
