Andy Warhol
Chicken 'N Dumplings, from Campbell’s Soup II

1969

About the Item

Screenprint in colours, 1969, on wove paper, signed in ball-point pen and numbered with a rubber stamp, verso, 91 from the edition of 250 (there were also 26 artist's proofs lettered A-Z), printed by Salvatore Silkscreen Co., Inc., New York, published by Factory Additions, New York, 88.9 x 58.4 cm. (35 x 23 in.) The Campbell’s Soup series is one of Andy Warhol’s best-known icons. The original 32 canvases, each depicting a different Campbell’s Soup variety, were painted in 1962 after a friend’s suggestion to paint something that everybody recognised. When the canvases were first exhibited at Fergus Gallery in Los Angeles, the reception was mostly of indifference or disdain. However, the collective power of the paintings was immediate and the gallerist Irving Blum immediately bought back the five paintings that he’d sold upon realising they functioned best as a group. Warhol went on to reinterpret these paintings in two editions of screenprints to better achieve the meticulously finished appearance. This technique also finalised his desire to remove all traces of the artist’s hand from the artwork. Feldman & Schellmann II.58

(29¼ x 45 in.) Corlett 140 ‘The architectural elements in the Entablature series can be seen as providing the artist with ready-made designs, in much the same way as comic strips and advertisements had provided him with easily recognised motifs in his earlier work.’ (Christoph Grunenberg, July 2000, Tate) Between 1971 and 1976, Lichtenstein produced two series of entablature paintings based on photographs he had taken in New York of 20th century architectural ornaments in Lower Manhattan and, specifically, in the vicinity of Wall Street and 28th Street. During this period, in May 1974, he began to also discuss the creation of the ‘Entablature’ print series with Master Printmaker, Ken Tyler...
