Salvador Dalí
Portfolio: Hamlet

1973

About the Item

Salvador Dalí, 1904–1989 (Spain) Portfolio: Hamlet, 1973 Salvador Dalí’s Hamlet (1973) is a stunning portfolio of ten drypoint etchings with aquatint and gold paint, each hand-colored on BFK Rives paper. Inspired by Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy, Dalí reinterprets the psychological depth and surreal elements of the play through his visionary artistic lens. His works evoke the dreamlike atmosphere of Hamlet, where reality and illusion blur in a world of betrayal, madness, and existential doubt. Shakespeare’s Hamlet follows the Danish prince’s descent into turmoil after the ghost of his father reveals that he was murdered by his own brother, Claudius. As Hamlet grapples with grief, deception, and the pursuit of vengeance, his relationships crumble, particularly with Ophelia. The play’s climax, a dramatic duel, brings about a tragic cascade of deaths, reinforcing its meditations on fate, mortality, and the fragile nature of power. This portfolio, numbered 40/145, features each sheet individually signed by Dalí in the lower right corner and is presented in a linen-covered portfolio and slipcase. Each print is housed in a titled folder with justification texts in both English and French. Published by Les Heures Claires (with blindstamp), this series is cataloged in Michel/Löpsinger (607–616), further solidifying its significance within Dalí’s graphic oeuvre. -- Specification: Salvador Dalí, 1904-1989 (ES) Portfolio. Salvador Dalí (Figueres, 1904 – Figueres, 1989) is considered one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the XX century and the founding father of Surrealism. In the course of his long career, he successfully experimented with sculpture, fashion, writing, and filmmaking. Dalí epitomizes the idea that life is the greatest form of art; André Breton said about him: “It is with Dalí that, for the very first time, the windows of the mind are wide open”. He always pushed boundaries, and he did the same with conventional lithography. He experimented a lot, also with techniques that would not be allowed today. He was a prolific printmaker, using techniques as drypoint, etching, woodcut and lithography. His output is esteemed at 1700 prints...
