About the Item
Born in Tamines, Belgium, Victor DeWilde (1903-1977) settled in San Francisco around 1925. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts, SF, and California College of Arts & Crafts, Oakland. During the 1930s he taught at Commerce Evening High School and then worked on the WPA Art Education Program. His colleagues included Robert McChesney, Otis Oldfield, George Post, and his student Zygmund Jankowski. DeWilde was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the California Watercolor Society, and the California Society of Etchers. A one-man show at the Ludins Art Gallery, San Raphael, 1957, reviewed in the Daily Independent Journal, March 16, 1957, reported that his works looked “modern.”
The Anchor reflects DeWilde's life experience in San Francisco. All his prints are scarce, existing largely as proofs with no known edition and this is true of this subject was well. It is signed and titled in pencil.
