About the Item
PAUL LANDACRE (1883 – 1963)
GRASSS FIRE, 1928 (Wien 53)
Wood engraving on tissue thin Japanese paper, signed in pencil and titled with full margins. Thee are only 20 signed, titled, and numbered impressions printed by the artist... Jake Wien in his extensively researched Landacre catalog raisonne, and in other comments indicates that although this example is numbered 25/100 (not completed). “Landacre skipped numbers when he numbered his prints. In other words, he may start at "5", he may skip numbers "8" through "11”.
Image 6 x 7 ¼ in, sheet 9 x 12 in. It was later part of Landacre’s “California Hills” book, published in 1931. In good condition. 4 bits of original hinges on recto.
Wien continues “This signed print is extremely rare. Several are in museum collections, and I discuss in the introduction to the catalogue raisonne how it is likely that many of the impressions have not survived through the years because of the extremely delicate paper he used in 1928 for many prints: tissue-thin white Japanese wove paper. Landacre stopped using this paper because, as I surmise, he likely found the impressions too vulnerable to be sent out for exhibition. Tearing was a common symptom…. Plus, it is extremely inventive, innovative--truly modernist in style”
Comes with the original mat with Landacre’s address on the verso, “Paul Landacre, 1916 Walcott Way, Los Angeles, California” Provenance: From the Distinguished Collection of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves.

Paul Landacre
Paul Landacre was an illustrator who specialized in wood engravings of naturalistic images executed in a sparse, rhythmic, linear style. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was an athlete as a youth. During his sophomore year at Ohio State University, he contracted a life-threatening illness that left him partially disabled. During this same year he also enrolled in a drawing class. After a long recuperation, Landacre moved with his family to California. In order to increase his physical strength he took long walks in the nearby rural areas, and on these walks, drew in his sketchbook. By 1918 he found a job as a commercial illustrator. In 1923 he enrolled at the Otis Art Institute, where he studied all types of media, including wood engraving. Landacre's artistic reputation began to emerge in the early 1930s with the publication of his book California Hills and other Wood Engravings and his first one-person exhibition in Los Angeles. He received many commissions for book illustrations; since he worked in a careful, deliberate manner, his large projects required years to complete. For thirty-one years the artist maintained a hand press in his home, allowing him to have total control over the printing of his designs. In 1939 he was made an associate of the National Academy of Design. The remainder of Landacre's professional career was balanced between teaching and illustrating books. Two examples from the National Gallery's permanent collection demonstrate the range of Landacre's work. His engraving, Smoke Tree, evokes the nearby desert scenery that the artist knew. The sharp, angular canyons of the mountain contrast with the delicate, small-leafed tree in the foreground. Some Ingredients is a still life composition that displays the same strength of line, forceful contrasts, and textures seen in his landscapes. Hiroshige Utagawa grew up in a samurai family in Edo where both him and his father were in the fire service before being orphaned. Hiroshige’s first formal art teacher was Rinsai. Though Hiroshige tried to join Toyokuni Utagawa's studio, he was turned away. In 1811, young Hiroshige entered an apprenticeship with the celebrated Toyohiro Utagawa. After only a year, he was bestowed with the artist name Hiroshige. He gave up his role in the fire department to focus entirely on painting and print design. He studied painting, intrigued by the Shijo school. Hiroshige’s artistic genius wasn’t recognized until 1832 when he became a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, creating 8000 prints in saturated color.
His series of woodblock prints of the Tokaido road connecting Edo to Kyoto was his breakthrough series known as The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (1832-1833). His most renowned series was known as 100 Famous Views of Edo...
