Temptation to Exist: black and white landscape of swimmers in pool

1990

About the Item

Black and white cityscape or landscape with swimmers bathing with friends in a large pool or body of water. This monotype -- a unique painting in ink -- presents an atmospheric scene of European leisure and sports. Paper 35 x 26 in. / 90 x 66 cm. Monotype on white MBM Ingres d'Arches paper. Signed by the artist, annotated "IA", and dated 1990 lower right in pencil. This large monotype depicts a group of young men swimming in a pool. Wearing goggles and swim caps, some clamber out of the water next to guardrails, while others dip in the water up to their necks and play with a ball. Flowing strokes of grey and black emulate the movement and dimension of water. The translucency of the ink is showcased by Zalopany's loose, painterly brush strokes, which create rich layers of texture. In the distance, a grey city skyline rises in outline, a stark contrast to the water's natural beauty. The composition of Temptation to Exist was inspired by a page in an old picture book. This use of found imagery is characteristic of Zalopany's large-scale realism: in this work, sheer washes of black and grey evoke the nostalgia and beauty of a vintage photograph. The artist also produced this monotype in color, in the manner frequently employed by Jasper Johns. Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes -- family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation -- when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content. She exhibited in the 1989 Whitney Biennial and her work is included in more than 25 institutions including the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Yokohama Museum, Japan; Royal College of Art, London.
