About the Item
An amazing New York City subject, Canarsie Meadows, is a lithograph by New York native Hyman J. Warsager (1909-1974). He was a painter and printmaker, technical innovator, and song writer. He was also recognized for a strong social conscience. His 1930s anti-lynching drawings are of special interest.
Warsager made prints on the NYC-WPA, often seeking out-of-the way local subjects, and worked with Anthony Velonis to develop the serigraph project.
This scene of Brooklyn's Canarsie Meadows, 1936-39, was published by the NYC-WPA and is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It has the stamp of the WPA, and on the back there are four glue stains. This configuration indicates that once there was a WPA label in that location.
It is also signed and titled in pencil.
