Roth, Ernest (American, 1879-1964). FROM PIER 4 - EAST RIVER. Etching, not dated. Edition size not stated. Signed in Pencil, and titled in pencil at the lower edge, and Signed, dated and titled in the plate. 12 5/8 x 10 1/8 inches (plate), 15 5/8 x 13 inches (sheet). In excellent condition. A large and brilliantly balanced composition foregrounding the pier with its small boats and old buildings rendered in great details in strong blacks, against the new skyscrapers of the City, rendered in white, with less detail. A highlight among the Roth's many New York cityscapes.

Ernest David Roth
Ernest David Roth was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1879 and, at the age of five, immigrated with his parents to the United States. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design under George Maynard and Edgar Ward and the New York School of Art under F. Luis Mora. Roth was a regular contributor to shows at the National Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy. In his painting and etching, Roth concentrated on simple architectural views, rarely including people in his scenes. He has received awards from the Salmagundi Club in 1911, 1912, 1915, 1917 and 1918, from the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1914 and 1936, from the Society of American Etchers in 1935 and from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1930. He received a silver medal for etching and a bronze medal for painting at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. Roth was a master printer as well as etcher, and he printed etchings for other artists, notably John Sloan. He also printed William Blake's large etching of The Pilgrimage to Canterbury. He lived and worked in Manhattan, and subsequently moved to West Redding, Connecticut.

Printed in sepia on laid paper with no visible watermark. Trimmed just outside the platemark, leaving the tab. In excellent condition. As with all of the Whistler Nocturnes, each impressions of this print is different, dependng on how Whistler wiped and manipulated the platetone. 11 5/8 x 7 7/8 inches (plate and sheet, plus the tab). Framed to 20 x 16 inches.
Provenance: Collection of Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, Jr. with his collection stamp (Lugt 1429) verso; Kennedy Galleries, with its inventory number a65609 in pencil verso, and with another inscription, "FWCX" in pencil, verso.
Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, 1831-1920, was a great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson, a powerful Boston businessman, and an Ambassador to France.
In 1875 he became the manager of the largest textile mill in America, the Amoskeag Mill in Manchester New Hampshire, and had major financial interests in the textile, banking, railroad, publishing and electrical industries.
