COLLONGES la ROUGE is an original hand drawn stone lithograph by the American artist Bernard Brussel-Smith, hand printed by Master printer Joseph Kleineman, JK Fine Art Editions Co. NYC in 1973. COLLONGES la ROUGE was hand proofed and printed from a hand drawn lithography stone in black ink on ARCHES paper 100% acid free. COLLONGES la ROUGE is an abstract landscape composition depicting a scene from Collonges-La-Rouge in Corrèze, one of the most beautiful villages in France famous for being entirely red. All houses in the village were built using the local red colored sandstone. This handmade lithograph, COLLONGES la ROUGE, features characteristic turreted Romanesque buildings, a graceful peacock and dove in the foreground - all beautifully executed using the traditional lithographic printmaking techniques by master artist Bernard Brussel-Smith. Print size - 25.5 x 20 inches, unframed, very good condition, pencil signed "Epreuve d' Artiste" (Artists Proof) by Bernard Brussel-Smith Image size - 18 x 14 inches Year printed - 1973 Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989) was a well-known 20th Century artist and illustrator, specializing in the medium of wood engraving. He was born, raised, and lived most of his life in New York City, a constant source of imagery for the artist from Depression-era 40's, and the post-war 50s until his death. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the New School for Social Research, New York and later taught art at the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Union, City College, and the National Academy. Brussel-Smith was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1952, and a full Member in 1973. His work is included in various public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and Carnegie Institute.

A North Carolina native, the African-American Romare Bearden spent most of his career in New York City. For several decades he was a social worker in Harlem.
