Published by Editions d'Art Manuel Bruker, Paris; printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris. Excerpted from the volume (translated from French), This work has been completed to print on May 10, 1960. On the presses de Jean-Gabriel Daragnès for typography, by Mourlot Frères for lithographies and robbe for intaglio. Two hundred copies were drawn on banks numbered from 1 to 200, including the first twenty with a suite on vélin du Marais.
ANDRE LHOTE (1885-1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also active and influential as a teacher and writer on art. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism and joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting at the Salon de la Section d'Or. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Gleizes, Villon, Duchamp, Metzinger, Picabia, Picasso and La Fresnaye. The outbreak of the First World War interrupted his work and, after discharge from the army in 1917, he became one of the group of Cubists supported by Léonce Rosenberg. In 1918, he co-founded Nouvelle Revue Française, the art journal to which he contributed articles on art theory until 1940

André Lhote
André Lhote was born in 1885 and was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism and joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting at the Salon de la Section d'Or. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Albert Gleizes, Jacques Villon, Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp, Jean Metzinger, Francis Picabia and Roger de La Fresnaye. Lhote lectured extensively in France and other countries, including Belgium, England, Italy and, from the 50s, also in Egypt and Brazil. In Egypt, Lhote worked with Effat Nagy using Egyptian archaeology as a subject matter for their work. He was rewarded with the Grand Prix National de Peinture for 1955, and the UNESCO commission for sculpture appointed Lhote president of the International Association of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers.

It was completed printing on the presses de Mourlot Frères, on October 5, 1950, for Les Éditions Verve, Paris. The edition of this album includes two CCLXXX examples numbered from I to CCLXXX and XX hors-commerce examples. Numbered from I to XX. History of the edition: Cirque was originally conceived as a collaboration between Fernand Léger and the novelist Henry Miller. At a time when the two were interested in working together, the publisher Efstratios Tériade Léger approached Leger to make prints for an artist’s book. Tériade hoped to publish a series of such books with the circus as the theme. Léger was a circus enthusiast who often used circus images in his paintings.
