About the Item

A touching scene of a young woman posing before Millet, modeling the female figure which would appear in his masterpiece painting L'Angelus. The painting depicts two peasants bowing in prayer over a basket of potatoes which they have just gleaned from a farm. Printed c 1930. Etching on heavy, watermarked Arches wove paper, 7 x 9 3/8 inches (171 x 233 mm), full margins. In very good condition with minor uniform age tone becoming more moderate at the extreme sheet edges. With extensive notations by Jacques in pencil including a signature, date, title and inscription dated May 13th, 1930, Barbizon. With the Atelier Th. Rousseau / J.T. Hatcher Concessionnaire, Barbizon ink stamp on the verso.
