About the Item
Walton Ford (b. 1960) is an American artist renowned for his artworks that vividly portray historic wildlife, flora, and fauna reminiscent of naturalist illustrations heightened with elements of fantasy.
Rich in allegory, Ford's works celebrate biodiversity while offering a critical examination of humanity's historical impact on the natural world.
Ford's dynamic compositions are rendered with remarkable precision, bringing to life complex depictions of animals through vibrant colors and intricate details. The artist fills his images with subtle symbols and precise details, creating a tapestry of layered meaning throughout his work.
"Bangalore" features a florescent Throated Kingfisher propped on a branch. The surroundings are rendered in an earth tone palette with the serene ecosystem occupying the foreground, inviting the viewer to observe and immerse themselves in this intimate natural habitat.
A closer look at this tranquil scene reveals a much more sinister reality. The bird clutches a fishing lure in its beak, a bleak mistake that hints at the encroachment of man and his impact on the bird's environment.
Ford's work is celebrated in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), and the Princeton University Art Museum (New Jersey).

Walton Ford
Walton Ford (b. 1960 - ) is an American artist who makes paintings and prints in the style of naturalist illustrations, often depicting extinct species. Each of his paintings is a meticulous, realistic study in flora and fauna, and is filled with symbols, clues, and jokes referencing texts ranging from colonial literature, to folktales, to travel guides. The paintings are complex allegorical narratives that critique the history of colonialism, industrialism, politics, natural science, and humanity's effect on the environment. Ford recalled taking trips into the deep forest in Canada with his father as a child, exposing him to unspoiled wilderness. As a teenager, Ford became immersed in the underground cartoons of the 1960s, including ZAP and anything by Robert Crumb, who he considers “a major influence.” He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, and in 1982 was granted a BFA degree in Filmmaking. He had his first major one-man show at the Brooklyn Museum in 2006.
