Stamped, verso, with estate stamp for Victor Di Gesu (American, 1914-1988) and created circa 1950 on Cannery Row sardine paper.
Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in Paris, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs among other Parisian Salons. He subsequently attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies in Rome at the Studio Hinna. Returning to California, Di Gesu worked beside notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson.
Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training combined with his scientific research into color theory, allowed him to create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, revealed a verve and spontaneity that remained uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Victor di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and France. After his return to California, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Victor Di Gesu
Victor di Gesu first attended the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris, where he studied with André Lhote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He subsequently attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona before furthering his studies in Italy. Returning to California, he worked with a variety of artists, including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. A superb, painterly impression, with fresh colors, on heavy cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (5/8 to 1 3/4 inches). Printed by the artist. The artist’s original archival mounting tape remains in the four sheet corners, recto (well away from the image), in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. A unique impression.
Image size 8 15/16 x 11 15/16 inches (227 x 303 mm); sheet size 12 1/4 x 15 1/2 inches (311 x 394 mm).
ABOUT THIS WORK
In addition to her almost 80 celebrated modernist color linocuts, Sybil Andrews also worked in the monotype technique. She typically produced two or three impressions (or pulls) from each hand-painted plate, each proof unique in its qualities of color values and vibrancy.
In 1933, Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power had an exhibition of their color monotypes and linocuts at the Redfern Gallery. Most of Andrews' monotypes were destroyed by a fire in an Ottawa gallery in 1959, and they now rarely come to the market.
