2008

About the Item

Cyril's Bay - Peter Doig, Contemporary, 21st Century, Magic Realism, Limited Edition Digital pigment print with silkscreen varnish on Somerset Velvet 255gsm with hand torn edges Edition of 500 Signed, numbered and dated, accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition PLEASE NOTE: Edition numbers could vary from the one shown in the images. The pictures are only for illustrative reasons, the work is offered unframed. Drawing on personal memories and photographic imagery, Doig explores the slippage between reality, imagination and memory through painting. The material properties of paint and expressive possibilities of color thereby serve to approximate the foggy, inarticulate sensation of remembering. Within an oeuvre of half-remembered landscapes and images, veiled by time and distance, the canoe is one of Doig's most powerful symbols. Cyril’s Bay, 2008 is an enchanting example of a subject which has preoccupied Peter Doig for more than 20 years. It depicts a canoe above a glassy surface of a pool of water and serves as a clear form amidst an indistinct foreground. The color palette of soft blue, icy white and pastel greens is reminiscent of the Trinidadian secluded gem of Cyril’s Bay. “The photos I use aren’t always that interesting or distinguished. That’s deliberate – I like the fact they’re bland: they leave a lot of space for invention. Painting is about working your way across the surface, getting lost in it … It’s about the idea of getting absorbed into them, so you get physically lost.„ —Peter Doig The canoes have become an inspiring image throughout his work; their reflection in the water is a fantasy mirror to the unknown. This inventive style, sensuous palette, and suggestive imagery are also maintained in Peter Doig’s prints through the mastery use of different printmaking techniques. Peter Doig is one of a number of pioneering contemporary figurative artists, and recent major solo exhibitions have been staged at institutional venues, including Fondation Beyeler, Basel; National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh; Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal; Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera, New York; and Tate Britain, London. His auction record on the painting Rosedale, created in 1991 sold for over $28 million at Phillips New York in May 2017. Art critic Jonathan Jones said about Doig: "Amid all the nonsense, impostors, rhetorical bullshit and sheer trash that pass for art in the 21st century, Doig is a jewel of genuine imagination, sincere work and humble creativity."

220 for 2020. Art Edition D No. 301–400 ‘My Second Drawing of Beuvron-en-Auge’
By David Hockney
Located in Zug, CH
David Hockney 220 for 2020. Art Edition D No. 301–400 ‘My Second Drawing of Beuvron-en-Auge’, 2021 11-color inkjet print on cotton-fiber archival paper 45.7 × 102.6 cm (18 × 40.4 in) Signed, numbered and dated Edition number 347 In mint condition Unframed Hockney made four different prints, each in an edition of 100, to accompany 400 copies of the book(s). Edition D is numbered, as here, 301-400. Edition A, B and C, each have different images for each of their editions, numbered respectively, 1-100, 101-200, and 201-300. There were another 1,620 “collector edition” books numbered in Volume 1, numbered 401-2,200. From a small, picturesque farmhouse in the rich fields and meadows of the northern French region of Normandy, Hockney followed and recorded the changing seasons throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. For the past decade, Hockney’s medium of choice has been the iPad and it was this technological instrument, he used to spontaneously depict impressions of the Norman landscape surrounding him. The two-year project entitled “220 for 2020” documents the passage of time by portraying the first spring blossoms, the smell of summer, the saturated colours of autumn, and the stark shapes of dark branches in winter time. This poetic undertaking represented a lifeline for the artist, and offered its viewers a message of hope in unprecedented times. As part of this project, Hockney included drawings from his “La Grande Cour, Rumesnil, Normadie, 26 Juli 2019”, sketchbook. These almost autobiographical accounts started in the vicinity of the artist’s Los Angeles home...
