About the Item
Maria Rivans is a contemporary British artist, known for her scrapbook-style collage aesthetic. A mash-up of Surrealism meets Pop-Art, Rivans’s work re-appropriates vintage ephemera to create dreamy realms, which transport the viewer into fantastical worlds of the imaginary. Each one finished with a dusting of subtle humor.
In her pin-up series, Maria Rivans reclaims iconic femininity to champion female strength. Her exotic and escapist works are often laced with ominous undertones, to remind us of the darker side of human nature.
‘Isabella’ depicts the face of the Swedish, 1950s actress Marta Toren. The print is named after Isabella Colbran, a Spanish opera singer who earned fame and success in the late eighteenth century, and who Toren portrayed in the 1954 film Casa Ricordi. For Rivans, Toren as Isabella represents a woman free to make her own choices, unburdened by received rules and obligations. Yet, for all its optimism, Rivans’s piece is full of deliberate contradictions, using the medium of collage to express the tensions that gender equality still faces. Across Isabella’s neck sits a beautiful, silver-foiled collar, crafted from spikey shells, to represent both protective armour and soft, feathery femininity. Around her head, Rivans has assembled a fantastic head-piece of exotic flora and fauna, laced with symbolic imagery: a red telephone reminds of freedom of speech, while
a tumbling TV set warns against the dangers of warped media; a female boxer champions the smashing of gender stereotypes, though she is outnumbered by a cluster of glamorous airhostesses; and gorgeous, colourful flowers summon the beauty and strength of the natural world, while prowling wolves and wild dogs remind us that our world can still be a savage and hostile place.
Through an intense attention to detail and an artistic sensitivity to color and composition, each of Rivans’ artworks is the product of months of careful deliberations and decisions, every tiny tweak necessary in the final formation.
Maria Rivans works from her studio in Brighton and exhibits throughout the UK. Her work is also highly appreciated internationally. Her colorful collages can be seen from New York to Hong Kong.

Maria Rivans
Maria Rivans creates eye-popping collages that explore the idea of existing realities and fantastical other worlds which transport us into a surreal and exciting universe. By appropriating an array of sourced vintage ephemera, Maria seeks to overwhelm us with her compositions by combining vivid and seductive colours with powerful and often humorous imagery. Maria exhibits her work across the UK as well as internationally – most recently having held a solo show at the Saatchi Gallery, London; Galerie Bhak, Seoul and featuring in Christie’s ‘Out of the Ordinary’ sale. Her work ‘Lady Valentina’ has been used as the campaign image for both London and Milan Affordable Art Fairs. ‘Carina’ was the face of the Scoop International Fashion Show held at the Saatchi Gallery in May 2015, and Nordea Private Banking selected ‘Scarlett’ to head their campaign for the Stockholm Affordable Art Fair.
