About the Item
Etching on Vélin de Rives paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition. Notes: From the folio, Shakespeare, Macbeth, Eaux-fortes de Gromaire, 1958. Published by Tériade, éditeur, Paris; printed by L'Imprimerie nationale, Paris, September 30, 1958. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), The present edition of Macbeth of Shakespeare according to the translation of François-Victor Hugo is illustrated with twenty original eaux-fortes engraved by Marcel Gromaire. The draw of these etchings was carried out by Raymond Haasen; the coppers were scratched after drawing. The text was composed in «Romain du Roi» body, twenty-four engraved by Grandjean au XVII Siècle sur l'ordre de Louis XIV. The compositions and impressions were executed under the direction of Georges Arnoult. The draw was completed on the presses of the L'Imprimerie nationale on the Thirtieth, September, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-Eight, Daniel Gibelin being director. It was drawn from this work CLXXX examples on Vélin de Rives, numbered from I to CLXXX, the first LX with a suite on Vergé de Montval, and XX examples, excluding trade, reserved for collaborators, numbered from I to XX. All [colophons] are signed by the artist. In addition, sixty albums were drawn with the continuation of the twenty etchings of the book—all the plates signed by the artist.

Marcel Gromaire
Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971) was a prominent French painter known for his powerful and distinctive style, characterized by robust forms, bold colors, and a sense of social realism. Born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre, France, Gromaire studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were influenced by Cubism and Fauvism, but he later developed a unique approach that emphasized monumental figures and scenes depicting the struggles of everyday life, particularly of the working class. Gromaire's paintings often conveyed a sense of social commentary and empathy, portraying themes of labor, war, and human resilience. His use of strong outlines and simplified forms gave his compositions a dramatic and expressive quality. Gromaire's art gained recognition in the interwar period, and he continued to produce significant works throughout his career. His paintings are held in major museums and collections internationally, reflecting his enduring impact on the development of modern art in France. Marcel Gromaire passed away in Paris in 1971, leaving behind a legacy of powerful and socially engaged artwork.
