About the Item

Kálmán Kubinyi, 'Marine', color aquatint and soft-ground etching, c. 1934, edition 70. Signed, titled and numbered '4/70' in pencil. A fine impression, on cream, wove paper; with margins (1 to 1 5/8 inches), in excellent condition. A scarce and intriguing dream-like, symbolist image, a genre rarely seen in the artist's oeuvre. ABOUT THE ARTIST American artist Kálmán Kubinyi was an influential mid-20th-century etcher, engraver and enamelist. A member of the Cleveland School, his modernist works ranged from social realist to machine age industrial subjects. His work was widely exhibited throughout the 1930s, including at the Venice Biennale (1937) and the New York World's Fair (1939). Kubinyi attended art classes taught by William Zorach as a child; graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1926; and briefly continued his art studies in Munich. Kubinyi supervised the graphic arts division of the Works Progress Administration in Cleveland from 1935 until 1939, when the WPA appointed him to head the entire Cleveland Arts Project. During the 1930s, Kubinyi also taught printmaking at the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art), the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute. He founded the Cleveland Print Makers in 1930 and served as its president for 11 years. Between 1930 and 1948 Kubinyi took top prizes on five occasions at the Cleveland Museum of Art's May Show, an annual event which helped to define the Cleveland School over much of its life. He was an influential exhibitor at the show in various media over a nearly 30-year period, beginning in 1928. During the 1940s, Kubinyi and his wife, artist Doris Hall, opened a gallery and studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The couple collaborated on a long and successful career in enameling, opened a studio/gallery in downtown Boston, and finally a studio in Stockbridge, where Kubinyi also directed the art department for Hans Maeder's Stockbridge School. Kubinyi's work is included in numerous museum and public collections including: Akron Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, University of Michigan Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
