Scêne d'Hippophagie is a b/w lithographed plate (n. 21), from the series containing a total of 120 satiric prints, Croquis Parisiens, realized by Honoré Daumier (France, 1808-1879).
Printed by Destouches and published by Maison Mrtinet in the French Periodical, Le Charivari on January 10th, 25th, 1857.

Superb original print, all margins on thin vellum, with autograph certificate of circulation written in black ink, signed and dated by the printer Destouches (Paris, January 9th, 1859).
Minor aging signs at the edges. Overall excellent codition.

Honoré-Victorin Daumier (Marseille,1808 – Valmondois, 1879)
The French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, through his artworks, Honoré Daumier, offers us commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the second Napoleonic Empire in 1870. Caricatures and cartoons of political figures, satirizing the behavior of his countrymen in newspapers and periodicals was his main activity, for which he became popular in his lifetime and is remebered and appreciate still today. He was a republican democrat whose targets were the bourgeoisie, the church, lawyers and the judiciary, politicians, and the monarchy. His talented and satiric pencil had a very high cost on his life: he was jailed for several months in 1832 after the publication of Gargantua because of a offensive depiction of King Louis-Philippe. Charles Baudelaire noticed the Daumier's production and greatly admired his paintings, which were to have an influence on a younger generation of impressionist and postimpressionist painters. Later generations have come to recognize Daumier as one of the great French artists of the 19th century. Daumier was prolific artist that produced more than 100 sculptures, 500 paintings, 1000 drawings, 1000 wood engravings, and 4000 lithographs.

Honoré Daumier
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life of 19th-century France. Daumier is famous for this satirical commentary through the lithographs he produced. He is best known for his caricatures of political figures. Daumier’s works are found in many of the world’s leading art museums, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rijksmuseum.

Per Augusto Breccia was born in Trento (Italy), on April 12, 1943, the son of Elsa Faini of Trento and Angelo Breccia of Porano (Orvieto). Since 1948 he has lived in Rome, where he has pursued the full curriculum of studies.
The father was a surgeon; his mother, a hospital operating room chief nurse. From a surgical point of view, “the operating theatre was his nursery”.
In his adolescence, his surgical “predestination” was in a certain way in contrast to his particular inclination toward the humanistic world. During his 14th and 15th years, fascinated by Dante, he studied with passion, by himself, the Divine Comedy, learning to appreciate the artistic, universal contents beyond the allegoric representations. At 16, upon entering classic high school, he discovered the glamour of the ancient Greek world. On his own initiative, he translated in blank endecasyllabics (published by Signorelli Ed.)
