Zorn and His Wife. 1890. Etching. Hjert and Hjert catalog 31 state ii. 12 1/2 x 8 3/8 (sheet 23 1/2 x 18). Edition 40-50. A fine impression on simili-Japan paper. Signed in pencil.
Zorn's wife, Emma Lamm, came from a rich family in Stockholm, interested in art and culture. Her Jewish ancestors were among the first to settle in Sweden in the 1770s. Emma Lamm's family liked the charming young man but he and Emma understood that without money of his own a marriage was out of the question.
In August 1881, Zorn went abroad to study and to try to earn enough money to support a family. The coming four years were spent mostly in England and Spain, but during the summers he was always at home, in Mora and in Dalarö where the Lamm family rented a summerhouse. During these years his style matured. His technique became more sure and his way of handling water colours became bolder. He began to study the appearance of water, how its surface fluctuated and reflected.
In the autumn of 1885, Anders Zorn and Emma Lamm married. The following eleven years were mostly spent abroad, first in England, later in Paris, but they always came back to Sweden during the summers.
The first years of their marriage were highly stimulating for Zorn's painting. Emma Zorn's encouragement and critical analysis of his work played a decisive role in his artistic growth. It was during these years that his ability as an aquarelist reached its peak.

Anders Zorn
Anders Zorn was born on February 18, 1869, in Mora, Sweden. In 1893, on his first trip to America, Zorn visited New York City en route to the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The self-made artist subscribed to American values and immediately felt welcome in America. While at the Chicago World’s fair, Zorn met Mrs. Gardner. This chance meeting initiated a long friendship and patron relationship. Zorn's outstanding portrait of Mrs. Gardner is at the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice and an impressive collection of Zorn prints have been on view at The Gardner Museum in Boston. In November of 1893, the Frederick Keppel Gallery on East 16th Street in New York City held the first American exhibition of Zorn's work and ignited Zorn's popularity. As evidence of his influence in America, Zorn portrayed three Presidents namely, Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland and William Taft. He was one of the most actively collected printmakers of the early 20th century and was often ranked among the world's most highly-esteemed printmakers. Anders Zorn died in Stockholm on August 22, 1920. In 1928, the Boston Herald published an article highlighting the acquisition of a collection of 110 Zorn etchings by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Alphonse Legros was born on May 8, 1837 in Dijon, France. While young, Legros visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his works. He was sent to the art school at Dijon with a view to qualifying for a trade, and was apprenticed to an interior decorator. In 1851, Legros left for Paris, but passing through Lyon he worked for six months as journeyman muralist for painter/art restorer Jean-Baptiste Beuchot, who was painting the chapel of Cardinal Bonald in the cathedral.In Paris, Legros studied with theater scene painter Charles-Antoine. He attended also the drawing-school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran (the "Petite école") where he found made friends with Jules Dalou and Auguste Rodin. In 1855, he attended the evening classes of the École des Beaux Arts.Legros sent two portraits to the Paris Salon of 1857: one was rejected, and formed part of the exhibition of protest organized by Francois Bonvin...
