About the Item

Each of these tinted etchings depicts a young woman with cherubs (putti), one of which holds an arrow, possibly representing Cupid. These etchings were created by Auguste Pequegnot after paintings by François Boucher. They were plates 11 and 12 in "Ornements, Vases et Décorations d’après les Maîtres", published in Paris in 1862. "Ornements, Vases et Décorations d’après les Maîtres" was a series of 100 prints depicting architectural, sculptural, and decorative arts ornaments from the Renaissance through Louis XIV, XV, and XVI periods, through the French Empire period of the early 19th century. They were etched or engraved by Pequegnot after such famous artists as Raphael, Durer, Boucher, Watteau, Berain, Guido Reni and Daniel Marot. These etchings are framed and matted identically in gold-colored and black frames with double blue-grey mats with gold trim at the inner edge of each mat. François Boucher (1703–1770) was one of the leading artists of the Rococo style in the 18th century. He was a prolific artist, working in diverse medium and genre. He was also a designer of decorative arts, including porcelain and tapestry. Boucher began his career as a printmaker and designer of book illustrations. He was initially known for large-scale mythological painting which led to royal commissions and membership at the Royal Academy. His works were purchased by King Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour, and Count Carl Gustav Tessin, among many others. In 1765, he was named first painter to the king and director of the Royal Academy. Boucher’s Rococo paintings and sketches were often romantic scenes of erotic and sentimental love in pastoral landscapes. He frequently included putti/cherubs and angels as in the pair of etchings presented here. One of the cherubs is holding an arrow and may represent Cupid.
