About the Item

'Dendrolaugus Dorianus Dorianus' Tree kangaroo native to New Guinea. From 'On the Genus Dendrolagus' by Lionel Walter Rothschild and Guy Dollman, published in 'Transactions of the Zoological Society of London', 1936. This was the first comprehensive taxonomy of the species. Lionel Walter Rothschild, Baron de Rothschild (1868 - 1937) was a British banker, politician, and zoologist. He opened his private museum in 1892. It housed one of the largest natural history collections in the world, and was open to the public. On his death in 1937, the museum and all its contents were given in his will to the British Museum (of which the Natural History Museum, London was then a part), the greatest accession which that institution has ever received. These miniatures exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail, as well as a meticulous fidelity to the larger works. Some compositional changes were made in order to accommodate the smaller format. Like the Havell edition, John James Audubon’s first...
