Alex Katz
Pas de Deux IV

1994

About the Item

Pas de Deux IV (Vicki Hudspith and Wally Turbeville) is a serigraph on paper with an image size of 36 x 20 inches, signed ‘Alex Katz’ lower right and numbered 106/150. From the edition of 173 (there were also 18 AP, 3 PP, and 2 RTP). Framed in a contemporary black frame. Catalogue – Bauer/Schröder 281 - 285, alexkatz print archive\ Katz’s Pas de Deux works are classic handmade serigraphs editioned at either Brand X Editions or Styria Studios in New York and published by Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts. The images are based on the artist’s monumental oil painting of the same name from 1983, now held by the Colby College Museum of Art in Maine. The Pas de Deux series depicts five ‘power’ couples from the 1980s art world. In each couple, the women are wearing coats by the famous designer Norma Kamali while the men are in sharply tailored suits. The emphasis is on style with Katz’s trademark ‘cool’ obliterating any clues to meaning. Katz noted the importance of style over substance in his artistic expression stating, “Style and appearance are the things I’m more concerned about than what something means… I’d like to have style take the place of content, or the style be the content… I prefer it to be emptied of meaning, emptied of content.” (Richard Marshall. “Sources of Style” Exhibition Catalog, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Alex Katz, New York, 1986, p. 13). Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts, the original publisher of this print. This print is as new, with no prior ownership.

Screen print on waxed paper plate. Unsigned from an unknown edition. Published by Bert Stern, New York. Plate size 10 x 10 inches. Frame size approx 17 x 17 inches. Stamped "Roy Lichtenstein On First Inc, 1969" on plate verso. Excellent condition. All reasonable offers will be considered. Lichtenstein made the paper plate for the well-known fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern, who had set up an uber-chic New York boutique called “On First Store”. Located in Manhattan, Stern’s idea was to commission stylish yet affordable objects for the home and wardrobe from notable fashion designers and artists. Unfortunately, the shop did not last long and most of the plates were left undistributed. About the Artist: Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) was an artist known for his paintings and prints which referenced commercial art and popular culture icons like Mickey Mouse. Composed using Ben...
