A.M. Cassandre, a renowned French graphic designer, is celebrated for his ability to blend artistic innovation with commercial appeal, and this poster is a testament to his masterful design skills.
This poster promotes the Foire de Paris, an annual trade fair in Paris that has been a significant event for businesses and consumers alike. The tagline "Carrefour mondial des affaires" highlights the fair's role as a global crossroads for business, emphasizing its international importance and the diverse array of goods and services presented. Historically, the 1958 Foire de Paris took place during a period of economic recovery and growth in France. The country was experiencing the "Trente Glorieuses," the thirty years of post-World War II prosperity, marked by industrial expansion, technological advancements, and increased consumerism. The fair reflected these trends, showcasing the latest products, technologies, and innovations, and fostering international trade relationships.
This poster not only advertises the event but also embodies the optimism and forward-looking attitude of the era. The Paris Fair was more than just a commercial event; it was a symbol of progress, modernity, and the thriving post-war economy. Cassandre’s poster captures this essence, inviting attendees to be part of this exciting and dynamic marketplace.

Adolphe Jean-Marie (AM) Cassandre
Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (1901 – 1968) was a French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer. Born in Ukraine to French parents, Cassandre moved to Paris as a young man where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian. The popularity of posters as advertising afforded him an opportunity to work for a Parisian printing house. Inspired by cubism as well as surrealism, Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In 1936, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City which led to commissions from Harper's Bazaar to do cover designs.
