Biography
Olivier Debré is a French abstract painter born in Paris in 1920. He is one of the main representatives of lyrical abstraction, along with Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Georges Mathieu and Jean Miotte. It was following a visit to Pablo Picasso’s studio in 1941 that Olivier Debré, an honoured artist and member of the Académie française, switched from figurative painting to abstraction. The influence of André Lanskoy awakened his strong taste for colour. In 1945, he began to produce works in gouache and ink influenced by Japanese calligraphy. In 1960, Debré began to use the intense, vivid colours that would come to define his style – a change of direction partly linked to his encounters with painters such as Mark Rothko and Jules Olitski.
Debré’s ambition was to express the emotions he felt about natural phenomena such as storms, typhoons and rivers (particularly the Loire) by using strong accents of colour on fluid, vibrant backgrounds – he described his work as “fervent abstraction”.
“I really tried to find how within a sign and without using conventions, I could express something without using illustration either.” Olivier Debré
After the majestic Signes-figures of the 1950s using a muted palette and material, the Signes-paysages of the 1960s appear, where the material stretches and becomes fluid, allowing light and transparency to emerge.
As a painter of immense spaces, Olivier Debré’s work has taken concrete form in large theatre sets: curtains for the Comédie Française (1987), the Hong Kong Opera (1989) commissioned by the Louis Vuitton Foundation, and the new Shanghai Opera.
Debré has been the subject of several major exhibitions during his lifetime: in 1967, he represented France at the World Exhibition in Montreal, in 1977, the National Museum of Wales devoted a retrospective to him and in 1995, a new retrospective was presented at the Jeu de Paume in Paris. In the 1980s he also worked for the theatre, receiving commissions from the Hong Kong Opera and the Shanghai Opera, as well as creating sets for the ballet Signs, choreographed by Carolyn Carlson.
“When I paint on the floor, there is a physical grip that is sensual, almost sexual. Olivier Debré
The painter’s work has also been the subject of a fantastic contemporary ballet: Signs, directed by the choreographer Carolyn Carlson. A unique show combining painting, music and dance, presented at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in 1997 and revived in July 2013.
Olivier Debré’s works are collected all over the world, in the greatest international museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg, the Phillips Collection in Washington, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, as well as in private collections and famous foundations such as the Gandur Foundation for Art in Geneva.

Olivier Debre
From an early age, Olivier Debré began to paint, draw and sculpt. At the age of 14, he was naturally influenced by the impressionist landscapes of his grandfather, the painter Edouard Debat-Ponsan (1847-1913). In 1938, received at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he joined the architecture studio run by his uncle and frequented that of Le Corbusier. In 1941, he meets Picasso who will have a decisive influence on him. He now seeks to express his emotion without going through the representation. The sign thus appears to him as the incarnation of emotion and thought. While being abstract, he considers that the sign does not mean anything other than reality. In 1949, he presented at Galerie Bing his first solo exhibition of colorful and expressive paintings. Around 1950, Olivier Debré favors matter and dull colors. Always carried by the idea of the sign as representation of the thought, he paints the series of "signs-characters". At the turn of the 1960s, Olivier Debré returned to the landscape and found his original way. the formats get longer, suggesting both a panoramic view of a limitless space and diving into a near-monochronic. He therefore describes his painting as a fervent abstraction because it symbolizes the emotion aroused by the contemplation of a landscape. During the 80s-90s, Olivier Debré benefited from several public commissions: the curtain-stage of the Comédie Française, the Hong Kong Opera, and the Shanghai Opera. In 1995, the National Gallery of the Jeu de Paume offers a retrospective of Olivier Debré, also presented in Europe and Latin America. He died in Paris on June 2nd, 1999.

Yang Chihung (Chinese: 楊識宏; pinyin: Yang Chihung; born 1947) Taiwanese-American artist.
Yang Chi-hung was born on 25 October 1947, in Chungli, Taiwan. He developed an interest in art in early childhood, and found inspirations to pursue an artist career after reading Lust for Life – The Life of Vincent van Gogh, translated by poet Yu Kuang-chung, in junior high school. Between 1965 and 1968, he attended the National Taiwan College of Art, developing a sound foundation in oil painting under the tutelage of famous Taiwanese artists of the Japanese Colonial period, such as Liao Chi-chun, Li Mei-shu and Yang San-lang. Meanwhile, he actively attended events organized by the modern art groups of Taiwan, namely the Fifth Moon Group and Ton Fan Group, only to find himself both intimidated and dissatisfied with the then relatively conservative art environment in Taiwan. In 1979, he emigrated to the United States of America with his wife, Jane, and their son, Daniel. His pioneering works soon landed him the “Outstanding Asian-American Artist” award. The concept and style of abstract expressionism as represented by the works of Jackson Pollock in the 1950s had great impact on Yang’s work. With the sense of nihilism that gave rise to abstract expressionism in the post-war period, artists no longer clamored to depict the external environment, but rather chose to focus on their own inner experience. Yang Chihung embraced this spirit about the early 1990s when his style turned abstract. In 1984–85 and again in 1985–86, he was twice awarded a year's residency at The Clocktower Studio in New York City by MoMA P.S.1.
In 2013, Yang, along with Xu Bing, Zhang Huan, and Li Chen, were the four artists featured in the Discovery Channel Asia documentary series, Chineseness, a multi-series production that focused on postwar Chinese contemporary artists.
He is of the generation of artists such as Chen Tingshi, Liang Yifeng, Yang Yuyu, Pang Jiun, Yinhui Chen, Jui-Ling Hung, De-Jinn Shiy, Yong-ik Cho, Wan Chuan Chang, Kuosung Liu, Sanlang Yang, Chetsai Shen, Fu-sheng Ku, Chunxiang Zhao, Ming Ju, Ming-Che Huang, Jiutong Liu, In-Ting Ran, George Chann, Yi Hong, Tzu-Chi Yeh, Max Liu, Yi-Hsiung Chang, Che Chuang
