Louise Nevelson
Tropical Leaf

1971

About the Item

As always, Caviar20 is thrilled to present the esteemed work of Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. Although Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson explored the many different branches of printmaking, as the field experienced a mid-century renaissance. Nevelson expanded her practice as an artist by exploring printmaking. While her sculptural works used a consistent methodology, mostly favoring painted wood in black, her work as a printmaker was more experimental. Nevelson consistently tried different techniques yet maintained an impressive synergy with her sculptural works. This work which appears to be made of slices of slate or even leather, is actually embossed lead. It is one of the best prints that mirrors what Nevelson was doing in three dimensions as it is made of stacked boxes with hold elaborate organic or "tropical" forms within. Not surprisingly this work can be found in several prominent museum collections including the MoMA the United States Library of Congress, the Brooks Museum of Art and several others. Caviar20 is excited to be offering this exceptional "Single Autographic Print" from 1954. It is the earliest "SAP" we've handled and come directly from the estate of Harold Town. Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse ever-changing. Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monoprints - which he called "Single Autographic Prints" Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen...

Poem 70-82
By Haku Maki
Located in San Francisco, CA
This work is immediately recognizable as the work of Haku Maki (1924-2000). It is one of his well-known abstract compositions. The print is in very good condition, with no flaws noted on the surface. There is some very, very light toning in the margins, barely visible only under bright light. Maki Haku (巻白, 1924–2000) is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He was a sōsaku-hanga artist in 20th Century Japan. During World War II, Maejima Tadaaki was trained as a kamikaze pilot in the Japanese air force, but the war ended before he was assigned a mission. Haku had no formal art training, but studied for two years with the sōsaku-hanga artist Onchi Kōshirō...
