In 1988, Keith Haring received a diagnosis of AIDS, and during the final year of his life, he dedicated his efforts to creating powerful imagery centered around the social activism of the AIDS crisis. One of his most iconic works, "Silence = Death," is an adaptation of a poster originally crafted by a collective bearing the same name. This poster would later become the defining symbol for ACT UP, an organization founded to advocate for visibility and an end to the AIDS crisis.
The primary symbol in Haring's adaptation is a pink triangle, a powerful emblem appropriated from the Nazi regime. In concentration camps, gay men were marked with an inverted triangle, symbolizing their marginalization at the lowest rungs of society. Haring's reimagining of the original poster covers this triangle with a trio of figures, each representing the proverbial principle of "See no evil, Speak no evil, Hear no evil." These figures collectively cover their eyes, mouths, and ears with both hands, serving as a poignant allusion to the Reagan administration's deliberate refusal to acknowledge and suppress discussion of the AIDS crisis.
This dual symbolism places significant culpability on those who turned a blind eye to the thousands of deaths within the LGBTQ+ community, drawing a parallel between the epidemic and a meticulously orchestrated genocide within a fascist regime.

Keith Haring
Keith Haring began experimenting with his bold, graphic lines and cartoon-inspired figures on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early 1980s. He called them his “laboratory,” places to develop a radical new aesthetic based on an ideology of creating truly democratic public art.
Haring’s paintings, prints and murals address the universal themes of death, love and sex, as well as contemporary issues he experienced personally, like the crack-cocaine and AIDS epidemics. They derive much of their impact from the powerful contrast between these serious subjects and the joyful, vibrant pictographic language he uses to express them, full of dancing figures, babies, barking dogs, hearts and rhythmic lines, as well as references to pop culture.
To make his art even more accessible, in 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop in Soho. In a foreshadowing of today’s intermingling of art and fashion, the shop sold merchandise and novelty items featuring imagery by Haring and contemporaries like Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his works sometimes included text, for the most part, he chose to communicate through drawing.
“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times,” Haring once declared. “It lives through magic.”

John “CRASH” Matos and Eric Orr met for the first time as high school students. Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse.
Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS.

In 1984, Eric Orr and Keith Haring joined forces to create a series of chalk drawings in the NYC subways. As their work evolved, the artists shifted their focus from the subway to the studio and embarked on the production of a suite of drawings. Included in the group was Repeat which had made its first appearance in the 23rd Street IRT uptown station. Little did Orr and Haring know that the reimagined drawing would be auctioned at Christie’s six years later. 2020 heralds a new beginning for Repeat, a truly unique silkscreen print that both illustrates and celebrates a fierce friendship that began in the early 1980s at The Roxy roller rink in NYC, when two young artists decided to trade t-shirts on the dance floor.
