About the Item
This artwork "untitled #1" 1978 is an original color serigraph on Wove paper by Canadian/American artist Howard Bradford, 1919-2008. It is hand signed, dated and inscribed A.P. (Artist Proof) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 20 x 13 inches, sheet size is 26 x 17 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed.
About the artist:
Howard Bradford was born in Toronto, Canada on July 14th, 1919 and his family moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1922. He spent his youth raising chickens and growing dahlias, the influence of which can be seen in his later paintings. In his 20's Howard was inspired to become an artist by his mentor Elwood Decker.
After serving in the Army during World War II, Howard took advantage of the opportunity provided by the GI bill and enrolled in Chouinard Art Institute. While at Chouinard, Howard met Dorothy Bowman and they were later married. The two studied together at the Jepson Art Institute and San Francisco Art Institute. Howard and Dorothy settled in Big Sur and became a part of the thriving art scene in the late 1950's and '60's. In 1960 Howard was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative printmaking.
Bradford was a Lifetime Member of the Carmel Art Association.
He has numerous exhibitions throughout the United States
His work is held in numerous collections and museums worldwide, including:
The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Library of Congress; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; New York Public Library; Crocker Art Gallery; New Britain Museum; Le Bibliotheque National de France; Victoria & Albert Museum, England; Monterey Peninsula Art Museum.
Howard Bradford died in Monterey, California on April 20, 2008.
