About the Item
"Grenade With Flowers" is a relief print with piercing printed in black ink on handmade Korean paper. This unique paper has natural fiber inclusions which were placed into the pulp during the forming of the sheet. They provide a strong horizontality that compliment the graphic, monumental image. Lieberman often reinterprets her sculptural ideas in the print medium, and the inspiration for the image is a highly polished black marble sculpture from her "Unidentified Dangerous Beautiful Objects" series.

Claire Lieberman
As a sculptor Claire Lieberman uses both traditional and experimental materials such as Jell-O, alabaster, wax, glass, rubber and marble, as well as video and photography to create installations that trigger a sense of dislocation. As a printmaker, Lieberman explores formal aspects of her often ephemeral sculptural works. Juxtaposing solid and ephemeral materials with static and kinetic imagery, Lieberman creates a surprising reality where the solidity and rigidity of both image and material remain unresolved. Claire Lieberman holds and MFA from Pratt Institute a BFA from Tufts University. Since 1996 she has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the US, including the Chelsea Art Museum, NY; Shore Institute of Contemporary Art, NY; Queens College Art Center, NY; Quincy Art Center, IL; and The LAB, NY. She has completed public commissions in Providence, RI, Milwaukee, WI and Salina, KS. Lieberman’s work has been reviewed in Sculpture Magazine, the New York Times and Art On Paper. This one-color lithograph pulled by hand from stone on Arches paper at the Shorewood Bank Street Atelier in New York by American master Sol Lewitt is a classic example of pure Minimalist art from the early 1970s - the most influential and desirable era. A very rare Artists Proof, aside from the regular edition of 150.
"Vertical Lines Not Touching (Black)" was created for the legendary portfolio "CONSPIRACY: the Artist as Witness", to raise money for the legal defense of the Chicago 8 - a group of anti-Vietnam War activists indicted by President Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell for conspiring to riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. (1968 was also the year Bobby Kennedy was killed and American casualties in Vietnam exceeded 30,000.) The eight demonstrators included Abbie Hoffman...
