Hide and Seek Series Photopolymer Etchings on Hanamule paper
My current work is inspired by the maze. A symbol that initially represented challenges foreign refugees face trying to establish political asylum upon arriving in the United States. Refugees navigating a bureaucratic system with legal and personal challenges much like entering a maze, often with no clear idea of where they will end up or the outcome of their efforts. In my mazes there is no clear pathway. It is in the process of layering grid upon grid, where a new structure forms creating the fabric-like richness characteristic of my work.
The start of this direction in my work also coincided with the death of my father. Working within the structure of the grid/maze was comforting and meditative. The repetition and set boundaries allowed me freedom to explore layering and movement within the structure. Whether through the process of printmaking, drawing or painting, the grid as a point of departure gives me a formal structure in which to play. I am exploring the space through layering, variations in the tone, color, texture and rhythm of movement.
In my etchings, I build the print with multiple plates consisting of silk collagraphs, solar, carborundum, relief and carved plates. Most of my prints are one of a kind. Each print is its own color story, as well as a unique combination of the plates. The process of printmaking is an integral part of how I create these individual pieces; layering, and working with the transparency and texture of the ink.
