Roxanne Lowit
Nadja in Galliano, Paris - portrait in tulle skirt, fine art photography 1994-95

1994-95

About the Item

Nadja Auermann was photographed backstage by Roxanne Lowit at the Galliano show in Paris. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. Roxanne Lowit is well known for her backstage photography, which shaped pop culture of the 1980s and 90s. This Photograph was taken at the John Galliano Spring 1995 show and depicts the supermodel Nadja Auermann in a big, 40s-inspired tulle skirt and small feather headpiece. She is bending forward, grabbing the hem of her skirt. VOGUE wrote about the show: "He [John Galliano] turned out Paris’s Pin-Up Studios with vintage cars, lingerie-strewn clotheslines, and a corrugated metal wall pasted with pornography. The clothes, which ran the gamut from retro-tailored skirtsuits to his signature bias-cut slip dresses, weren’t short on flourishes, either." Daring poses, red lips, crooked smiles, and sex appeal characterize the photographic oeuvre of the late Roxanne Lowit. Catapulting us straight back into a decade of excess and ecstasy, her unfiltered lens into the 90s reveals more than ever. Uninterested in glossy façades, the star photographer captured the unseen without being voyeuristic. Eternalizing the prime of supermodel culture with Kate Moss and Naomie Campbell, enfant terribles of the art circus, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, or dictators of taste, such as Karl Lagerfeld, Lowit’s work embodies the Who's Who. Effortlessly glamorous, Lowit's visual language underlines carefree moments and encounters of the rich and famous. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel...
