Morris Louis, born Morris Louis Bernstein in 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland, is widely hailed as one of the leading color field and abstract painters of his time. A member of the important Washington Color School alongside Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland and Sam Gilliam, Louis was concerned with the importance of color and form. A virtuosic and prolific artist, Louis produced no fewer than three major series of paintings between 1958 and 1962—the Veils, Unfurleds, and Stripes—an astoundingly coherent sequence of innovations in abstraction.
Louis attended the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts from 1927 to 1932, and subsequently moved to New York, to Baltimore, and finally settled in Washington D.C. in 1952, teaching painting at both Howard University and the Washington Workshop Center of the Arts. Kenneth Noland and Louis, both teaching at the same time, bonded over a shared enthusiasm for the work of artists including Jackson Pollock and Robert Motherwell. In April 1953, Noland and Louis visited New York. During that trip, they were both prompted by Clement Greenberg, leading art critic of the time and only trusted confidant of Louis, to visit Helen Frankenthaler’s studio to view her masterpiece painting Mountain and Sea—a visit which would be a most transformative experience for Louis.
After the formative visit to Frankenthaler’s studio and the discovery of her staining technique, Louis reached a turning point in his career. By soaking the canvas with paint, rather than painting onto its surface, the paint and the canvas became one. Through this important stylistic development, Louis successfully removed any emphasis on the artist’s hand and gesture; a markedly different style to the Abstract Expressionist paintings of his peers; to create pieces of deliberate fluid painting. With this technique, the fundamental focus shifted solely to color and form—Louis’s preferred medium to achieve this desired effect was a specific formula of Leonard Bocour’s Magna paint which held a uniquely fluid consistency.
In 1962, the artist’s life was tragically cut short by lung cancer. However, despite the brevity of Louis’s inspirational career, he developed a vital link between Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting and Minimalism which would continue to have a profound influence on the generation of artists who have followed his groundbreaking artistic achievements. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1963. His work has since been included in a number of prestigious museum collections, of which the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C, are a few notable examples. (source: Sotheby's)

Soho Building Architecture, A Brief History
The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District comprises about 500 buildings, many of which are characterized by their cast-iron facades. Development of the district began in the late 18th century. The population surged after the War of 1812, and some homes from this era still remain. The latter half of the 19th century saw the district evolve into a center of commerce and entertainment, and the majority of the cast-iron buildings the district is known for were constructed during this period. The use of cast-iron allowed for ornate facades that were a much cheaper alternative to granite and marble. However, an increase of industrial production along with rising crime and “immorality” steadily drove residents out of the area.
The district began to decline in the early 20th century, leaving many spaces vacant for decades and leading some to refer to the area as Hell’s Hundred Acres.
It was not until the late 1960s that artists became attracted to the area because the large, unoccupied loft spaces made affordable studios. Many of those who moved into the area lived in their workspaces, even though it was illegal to do so, and the area was not sufficiently equipped for residential life, lacking basic necessities.
At the same time, the entire landscape of SoHo was threatened by plans to build the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX) - a proposed ten-lane elevated highway that would require the demolition of much of SoHo and Little Italy.
Artists in the area collaborated with other preservation advocates in the first, unsuccessful attempt to designate SoHo as a historic district for its architectural significance. Although that failed, they also formed Artists Against the Expressway and ultimately helped defeat the plans for LOMEX, which saved the architecture in the area.
The “SoHo Effect” has become a model for repurposing an industrial district for mixed use, both commercial and residential, while preserving much of the existing structural integrity. Today SoHo is known for its unique cast-iron architecture, desirable loft living...

Architectural Abstract Landscape of London in 3-Dimensional vision on Print
Located in London, GB
London, 2021
In this piece I try to express my feeling of the overwhelming containment and expansive architecture of London. I wanted to make the piece three dimensional - showing buildings moving in and out of the print - as well as the jumbled nature of the old and new. - Mike G Jackson
"The goal isn't to replicate the real world - it is to show where the real world and the process meet - sometimes pushing towards the real world, sometimes pushing towards the process - but never completely at either extreme." - (the Artist: Mike G Jackson)

About the Artist:
Michael Jackson (b.1966) is an experimental photographer based in North Dorset, England. He studied art at West Dean College in Sussex, then apprenticed under landscape painter Christopher W Baker and later discovered his passion for photography. He moved away from working with traditional camera techniques in 2015 and is currently progressing the Luminogram process into new directions in which he has become regarded as a leading practitioner.
Past awards and accolades include being named a Finalist for the Hasselblad Masters Award (2008, 2009, 2010) and winner of the 2013 Chris Beetles Award. His work has been exhibited internationally and is part of various private and public art and photography collections including The National Art Gallery in Washington, USA.
Michael Jackson’s Luminograms are a very special piece of photographic art. Not a photograph in itself but a creative medium of its own. Each one is meticulously crafted by Michael in his darkroom. There are many structured stages to go through before the photographic paper can be hand developed and permanently fixed. Once Michael is happy with a finished Luminogram print it’s then toned in Selenium, which not only intensifies the prints tonality, but also increases the prints archival quality. Traditional photographic darkroom printing techniques have an unquestionable pedigree when it comes to the life expectancy of a photograph.
Each Luminogram is unique and only one Silver Gelatin Print is produced of each image. The images reveal themselves with a 3D quality; viewed in the flesh the abstracted surreal forms within the paper come alive to the viewer.
Michael Jackson’s Luminograms were exhibited for the first time at MMX Gallery in 2016; The Self Representation of Light exhibition and the following year at Photo London 2017 as well as next Photo London editions. The Luminogram work was also paired with theologian Edwin A. Abbott in a book published by 21st Editions, titled after the author’s famous work ‘FLATLAND’ and premiered in November at the Grand Palais in Paris, for Paris Photo 2017. Other recent group exhibitions include Light + Metal, PhotoEye Gallery, (USA) and Unbound 7, Candela Gallery, (USA), ATO>MIC, MMX Gallery, London 2022.
