Jessie Spiess is a Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design graduate who lives and works in Milwaukee. During her time at MIAD she also studied at the Bauhaus Universitat in Weimar, Germany for a semester on exchange. The bulk of Jessie’s artwork is made through and in the photographic medium, but she is always searching to push the barriers as to what constitutes the title, ‘photograph’. She also enjoys drawing, and experiments endlessly with fusing the two. Artist Statement: “When I began my endeavors as an image maker, my study of photography led me to a process that presented the photograph as a product -- a resolution, a destination. Here, the image exists as a densely layered space, an architecture of coliding lines and piled shapes, and a more flexible system through which to explore my intuition. By drawing from the nature of viewing photography and creating drawings these images at once diminish representational form and facilitate questions about memory and experience.”
