Salty Branches, Mexico by Paul Nicklen - Contemporary Landscape Photography

2022

About the Item

Salty Branches Mexico, 2022 24" x 42.5" / Edition of 20 31" x 55" / Edition of 15 40" x 71" / Edition of 10 60" x 106.5" / Edition of 7 "The Colorado River begins just south of the continental divide as nothing more than a trickling stream. As it descends the Rockies, it feeds on meltwater and cleaves through rock to form deep snaking canyons. However, extreme drought across the west has driven the river system to an all-time low. By the time it reaches sea level in Baja, Mexico, its last-remaining branches of freshwater fan out to form giant, sprawling trees in a bid for the ocean. From the window of a two-seater flying low over the earth's crust, I captured the last leg of its journey elegantly scrawled in silt. Heartbreaking in its weakened state and yet breathtaking in its resilience, it was as if the very lungs of our earth were exposed. The fractals branching across the surface mirrored the veins in my arm like a thread weaving all living creatures into the landscape’s tapestry. I felt exhilaration rising in my chest as we flew over branches upon branches of elaborate designs all carved by nature’s delicate hand; the first and greatest artist. Out of the thousands of images I captured during the flight, only a handful of candidates have made it to print." - Paul Nicklen Paul Nicklen's Biography: Paul Nicklen (Canadian) is a visual artist and marine biologist who has documented both the beauty and the plight of our planet for over 20 years. Paul’s photography informs and connects by creating an emotional bond with wild subjects in extreme conditions. After a 20-year career of photographing for journalistic publications like National Geographic, Paul’s perpetuating dream is to revisit his archives for the true artistic gems and release them to the world. His ongoing journey is to continue photographing intimate, evocative, powerful subject matter to create a thought-provoking body of work. Paul hopes his viewers look into the eyes of the animals in his photographs and fall in love with their vulnerability. In addition to being one of the world’s most renowned nature photographers, Paul is a well-known speaker, TED Talks participant, author, and National Geographic Fellow. In the past two decades, Paul has collaborated with scientists, filmmakers, conservationists, and explorers to create awareness and inspire action for global issues such as climate change. Paul has garnered more than 30 of the highest awards given to any photographer in his field, earning a global following of celebrities, conservationists, and fans.

The more grand the ambitions with a ‘tableaux’, the more vulnerable each of the constituent parts are to a sense of dragging the end photograph lower. Location scouting is an integral part of our working year, as storytelling rarely blossoms in a contextual vacuum. The idea of using tall snow berms to frame the Ferrari and then offering a period James Bond type narrative, was not a new addition to our conceptual idea factory. It had been knocking around the edges for some time, but we simply did not know exactly where to find narrow roads shouldered by walls of snow 10 foot high. Weather patterns do not give the filmmaker the luxury of forward planning in something so specific and we need to plan well in advance. What we did know is that these visuals tend to occur towards the end of the ski season at high altitude in both Europe and America. It is uneconomic to snowplough small private roads with further winter storms around the corner, but equally, as soon the spring thaw accelerates, the snow berms on ploughed roads lose their height and grandeur. There was some precision required on timing and my intuition suggested that this was a shot for the third week of April, whether the location was in the Alps, the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. We knew we would be filming in America after Easter and our research concluded that the ski area that tends to have the most amount of spring snow in the US is the Sierras. Historically the mountains above Lake Tahoe get dumped on in March and the snow above 7000 ft can still be very deep in mid-April. To shoot in California rather than Colorado was a big call, but we felt it gave us the best chance and the best access. The snow season runs late in Lake Tahoe. Our team based themselves out of the old railroad town of Truckee, California and with the help of some properly informed mountain men...

Khumbu Glacier is a glacier in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It is the highest glacier in the world with an altitude of 8,000 meters. It is fed by the slopes of Mount Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse and begins in the "Valley of Silence," the highest cirque on earth with up to 6,000 meters altitude. At the end of the Valley of Silence, the Khumbu Glacier has a steep breakaway, the Khumbu Icefall, about 600 meters high. At the end of this icefall, the glacier turns from its initial northwesterly course to a southwesterly direction. Here is also the base camp for the ascent of Mount Everest via the southern route (5,400 m). Christian Voigt...
