About the Item

Reprint of a vintage photograph titled "Monsieur (Louis) and Madame Paulhan of France ready to fly a Farman model lll in Los Angeles - 1910 from an original photograph by an unknown photographer. Scanned and panoramic creation by Roy Eugene Christian (American, 1934-2014). Unsigned, direct gift from the artist to myself. Presented in archival mat with foam core backing. Unframed. Image, 8.57"H x 23.94"W. The Los Angeles International Air Meet (January 10 to January 20, 1910) was among the earliest airshows in the world and the first major airshow in the United States. It was held in Los Angeles County, California, at Dominguez Field, southwest of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe in present-day Rancho Dominguez, California. Louis Paulhan was born in Pézenas in 1883 and was a citzen of Sartrouville, where he lived in Gypaète House, rue Jean Jaurès, now an old people’s home known as "Villa Berthe". An airship engineer, he showed an acute interest in building scale models and won a competition in which the first prize was the life-size construction of the winning model. In view of the model’s complexity, they preferred to offer him an air-frame. Louis Paulhan soon managed to procure an engine and undertook his apprenticeship as a pilot, a title he was the 10th person in France to conquer. ( Louis Blériot was the holder of licence Nr1.)Louis Paulhan earned public attention at several air shows, especially that of Douai, which took place from July 10th to July 18th 1909, where he smashed the records in altitude (150m) and duration (1h and 07mn), covering 47 km. He triumphed in the London-Manchester race - a 300 km long flight. After being mobilized, then demobilized, as a fighter pilot in WWI, he became a seaplane builder, and later retired to St-Jean-de-Luz, where he died on February 10th 1963. Roy Christian was a practicing Medical Doctor in Santa Cruz County at Dominican Hospital Emergency room for many years. A world traveler and Panoramic Camera (Century Panoramic) photographer and lifelong "Camera Nut". An excellent artist and photographer in his own right. He would also take photographs and multiple scan them at high resolution and create panoramic scenes from standard rectangle or square photographs. He traveled to Tibet, Egypt, China, Europe and many other countries to take photographs. We supplied numerous historical photographs including the one used here, to our dear friend Roy, whom we were proud to be friends with since 1975.

Early 20th Century Photograph -- Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode
By Sigismund Blumann

"Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode" a Lithobrome photograh by Sigismund Blumann (American, 1872-1956). Signed "Sigismund Blumann" lower right. Titled "Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode" on verso. Image size, 11.25"H x 13.25"W. Between 1923 and 1932, his pictures were accepted at photographic salons in Amsterdam, Toronto, Rochester, Seattle, and Los Angeles. In 1927, a one-person exhibition of his bromoil prints traveled to camera clubs in Chicago, Akron, Cincinnati, and New York. In addition to bromoil, a process that yields pointillistic images, Blumann utilized such unusual processes as kallitype (Vandyke brown), lithobrome, and pastelograph (the latter two probably his own inventions) to create original photographs using chemical processes he invented. Sigismund Blumann (1872–1956) (figure 1) was a prominent tastemaker in Californian photography during the 1920s and 1930s. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area for his entire career, he edited magazines, wrote books, and made creative photographs. From 1924 to 1933 Blumann edited Camera Craft, the leading West Coast photographic monthly. Subsequently he established his own periodical, Photo Art Monthly, which he published until 1940. In these two magazines — for over fifteen years — Blumann found a large audience of mainstream pictorial photographers. In addition, he wrote five instructional books on photography...
