About the Item

Douglas Kirkland Brigitte Bardot, Mexico (Cards) 1965 (printed later) Silver gelatin print Signed and dated lifetime print French actress Brigitte Bardot photographed on set of the comedy-adventure film ‘Viva Maria’, 1965. Douglas Kirkland found Bardot playing the card gamer ‘Solitaire’ in her dressing room between takes. Douglas Kirkland captured Brigitte Bardot through the 60’s. “United Artists sent me to Mexico with Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau for ‘Viva Maria!’ Douglas Kirkland has been at the cutting edge of fashion, photojournalism and portraiture, working for the world’s most reputable magazines, for more than 50 years. As a young photographer in 1961 he was assigned to shoot Marilyn Monroe and during several hours in a closed studio one night, captured a stunning portfolio of alluring and intimate images that survive to this day as a testament to her beauty and vulnerability. Kirkland was born in Toronto Canada. He joined Look Magazine in his early twenties, and later Life Magazine. During the golden age of 60’s/70’s photojournalism his assignments ranged from The Trans Siberian Railway to Japan, from fashion to film. He has photographed the legendary Coco Chanel at work, and the stars of over one hundred motion pictures. From The Sound of Music to Titanic and The Great Gatsby, Kirkland’s lens has explored the universe of fame. His work ranges from exquisite nudes to powerful portraits of the notable and the notorious, from photo-journalism to the catwalk and is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Houston Center for Photography and the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles. Kirkland remains in demand today by international magazines such as Vanity Fair and is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Awards from numerous bodies including the highly valued Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement. When not traveling the globe on assignment, he lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wife and business partner Françoise. Follow us on 1stdibs at IFAC Arts

But Meatyard was also looking at Giorgio de Chirico and the European Surrealists and here employs their penchant for the lifeless mannequin figure. A headless dressmaker’s dummy...

Junio Eskew, Houston Fat Stock Show
By John Stryker
Located in Dallas, TX
Signed and titled. Vintage gelatin silver print Johm Stryker was born in Rockford, Illinois, September 1, 1883. He is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"*- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He invented the chute that the animals come out of and he developed new ways of photographing action during an event. Dramatic shots were taken from the ground, propping his camera on the toe of his right boot right next to a bucking bronco. Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport. His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. His photographs have been published widely including Life, Look, The Cattleman, The Western Horseman, and The Quarter Horse Journal. In 1977, The Rodeo of John Addison Stryker...
