Mid 20th Century
About the Item
This striking semi-abstract oil on canvas interior by acclaimed Denver modernist Paul K. Smith captures the creative energy of an artist’s studio. Painted in the mid-20th century, the composition features expressive depictions of flowers, paint supplies, completed canvases, and an easel, rendered in Smith’s signature style that blends representation with abstraction.
The work reflects Smith’s masterful use of color, balance, and texture—elements central to his evolving modernist approach. Framed dimensions are 40 ⅞ x 34 ⅝ x ¾ inches; image size is 34 ⅛ x 28 ⅛ inches. The painting is signed and presented in a complementary period frame.
About the Artist: Paul K. Smith (1895–1977)
A significant figure in Colorado’s modern art movement, Paul K. Smith trained at the St. Louis School of Fine Art and the Washington University School of Fine Arts, where he studied under colorist Fred G. Carpenter. After serving in World War I, he settled in Denver in 1921 and studied with John E. Thompson, a pioneer of modernism in the region.
Smith became a central figure in the Denver Artists Guild and a founding member of the influential 15 Colorado Artists collective. His early works focused on the mining towns and ghost towns of Colorado, using vibrant palettes and intricate surface textures to elevate decaying structures into glowing, quilt-like compositions. By the 1950s, his work shifted toward pure abstraction, emphasizing color, design, and form over subject.
A lifelong bachelor devoted to his art, Smith described his process as intuitive and experimental: “I sometimes start to do a painting of a still life or landscape and end up abstract… My interest in painting has to do with color, composition, balance, and self-expression.”
Smith exhibited widely, including multiple solo shows at the Denver Art Museum, which also holds his work in its Anne Evans Collection. His paintings reflect both personal vision and a thoughtful evolution of American modernism in the West.

Paul Kauver Smith studied commercial art and design at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts from 1915-16 with a brief interruption during World War I. After the war, he returned to the School of Fine Arts and went on to study at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1921, Smith moved to Colorado to study under John E. Thompson at the Denver Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. Thompson, who is considered to be the pioneer of modernism in Denver, was a strong influence on Smith. In 1923, Smith was hired by the Academy as an instructor. That same year, his work was accepted for the first time for display at the Denver Art Museum and he was also awarded two solo exhibitions. The museum later added his work to their Anne Evans collection. In 1959, the Denver Art Museum also reproduced one of his paintings titled Houses at Victor for their Western Heritage exhibition catalogue. Smith became a permanent resident of Denver and was a member of the American Artists Professional League as well as the Colorado and the Denver Art Guilds. He also joined a Denver group called The Colorado Fifteen. “The Fifteen” came into existence in 1948 as an association of professional artists dedicated to the avant-garde. The group was well known and was a crucial contribution to Denver's cultural landscape.
