Olga Antonova
"Elegant Still Life of Two Stacked Cups, One with Dark Blue Stripes"

2015

About the Item

"Elegant Still Life of Two Stacked Cups, One with Dark Blue Stripes" Olga Antonova’s subject is compositions of extraordinarily elegant and beautiful cups, plates, teapots, and dishes, but there is something whimsical about these paintings that belies their formality: stacked teacups are also amusing, having a kind of jaunty and upbeat personality of their own, polka dots are as endearing to adults as to children, and everyone responds to the 'bling' and sparkle of gold and Antonova’s seemingly effortless ability to paint these radiant details. This painting is included in an exhibition in our Boston gallery that opened very recently which will be on view through July 1, 2018. Antonova is one of the leading painters of still lifes in the country, and her unique works are internationally acclaimed. Commissioned paintings incorporating one’s own personal collection is also an option. Olga Antonova was born in Volgograd Russia in 1956 and graduated from the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg in 1980. Soon after graduation she immigrated to the US and has resided in the Boston area for many years. Her works have been exhibited in 35 solo exhibitions and in over 60 group shows in the US and Europe, articles have regularly appeared in “The Boston Globe,” “American Art Collector,” “Art News” and “The Boston Herald,” and her works are included in numerous private and public collections including the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum, Rutgers University. Antonova is also the recipient of an Artists Fellowship in Visual Art awarded by the City of Sacramento, CA. Olga Antonova has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 2006.

Wonder, or The Plane of the Invisible - blue trompe l'oeil oil painting
By Anthony Mastromatteo
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
In the trompe l'oeil panel painting, "Wonder, or the Plane of the Invisible," a comic cut-out of Wonder Woman sits between two spatial planes—the top, very flat plane is cut out in the shape of a plane as a play Wonder Woman's famous "Invisible Plane." The silly way the comic book character would sit in an imaginary seat flying through the air would force the artist to wonder, “how do you represent an invisible plane”. Here, we see a bright blue canvas, sprinkled with glittery paillettes; an outline of an airplane beneath an outline of the word “SKY”, an infantile depiction of the sun made of masking tape, and finally, the hero, Wonder Woman, her comic clipping taped onto the invisible plane. A very believable, naturalist blue sky with puffy white clouds is visible through the letters and the invisible airplane. It feels like we can reach into the invisible plane to find the natural world…yet atop the plane is an old cartoon of the first female superhero. She overlaps the realistic atmosphere, and even casts a shadow onto it. The planet’s orbit is dedicated to the sun, and all living things need the light to survive…yet this most important element is made up of a crude array of tape strips, asymmetrical, and even torn in-half. This sun refers back to Pablo Picasso’s sun...

Sean Farrell, "Morning Glory", 16x12 Pear Grapes Floral Still Life Oil Painting
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
"Morning Glory", is a 16x12 oil painting on board by artist Sean Farrell. Featured are two pears on a pedestal mixed with freshly bloomed morning glories. Dramatic light combined with a dark background make this piece a bold and blooming composition. The rich blue of the flowers contrast nicely with the subtle tones of red found in the grapes. About the artist: “As I paint at my easel each day in the studio, I approach creating art with the idea of continually developing my artistic understanding and enhancing my personal expression,” writes Sean Farrell of his philosophy of life as an artist. Farrell, who grew up in a small town where there were few opportunities for formal art education, began drawing on his own at a young age and through intense study of the great artists he found in library books began to nurture his innate talent. He writes of his younger years, “Looking at great paintings always excited me and by visiting museums [and] studying numerous art books…I gradually began to increase my artistic understanding,” which led Farrell to teach himself to paint with oils in the late 1980’s and then eventually to attend a painting workshop in New Mexico in the early 1990’s where he met numerous professional artists, who inspired him to a full-time artistic career. Internationally, the prestigious Florence Biennale invited the artist to participate and exhibit work in Florence, Italy. NYARTS Magazine covered the exhibition and in their published review gave the following praise to the works of Sean Farrell… “Works deserving special attention was Sean Farrell’s exquisitely painted flower and fruit arrangements. Eye-catching with his use of dramatically bold colors mixed with delicate detail in a very modern old-master style.” Choosing to travel extensively throughout Italy and also to other regions of Europe over attending art school, the artist has studied and learned from the great master works in the history of art. His paintings reveal his affection for the 17th century Italian and Dutch painters while still remaining truly unique. Mr. Farrell’s works are distinctive for their elegant and graceful compositions, his rich jewel like color, and an elevated sensitivity to the beautiful nuances of light. His works reveal a master’s touch and a quiet ease. Sean Farrell is internationally recognized and a highly collected artist. He is known for his vivid and luminous oil paintings...
