Léon Nancey
French Mid Century Oil on Board, The Blue Vase, Circle of Henri Matisse

1940s

About the Item

French mid century oil on board of an interior by Léon Nancey. Though not signed the painting was acquired directly from the artist's atelier. This captivating painting depicts a blue ceramic vase filled with a bunch of cascading roses and flowers, to the background a collection of rich fabrics, rich blue, creams and whites. The artist employs bold brushstrokes which form a contrast between the luxurious blues and more muted colours of the rest of the composition creating a textured depth that draws the viewer in. The composition balances realism and impressionism, making it a harmonious blend of intimacy and abstraction. The artist’s distinctive technique offers a glimpse into a serene moment of beauty and calm very reminiscent of the paintings of Matisse from this period. Léon Nancey was born in Paris and studied there. His earliest exhibitions were at the Salon d'Automne from 1924 and the Salon des Independents. However he went on to exhibit widely in France, Switzerland and elsewhere. During his early career he lived in Grenoble and was associated with the 'artistes Dauphinois' Flandrin, Berger and Deloras. He also found time to teach and one of his most noted pupils was John Paschoud.

The Tulips, Art Deco Still Life Oil on Canvas of Tulips in a Vase in an Interior
Located in Cotignac, FR
French Art Deco still life of a vase of tulips in an interior by Auguste Mallard. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a period patinated wood frame. A colourful and strong painting of an interior view, a table with books and as the centre piece a beautiful blue ceramic vase with twisted handles holding a magnificent bouquet of brightly coloured tulips. Mallard has captured the abandon of the blooms in the vase, the way tulips twist and furl raising and lowering their beautiful colourful petals. The colours of the flowers really stand out against the more muted tones of the background, curtain and table. A very elegant and stylish painting. This painting has the feel of some of the still life works from the same period by Tamara de Lempicka who was a contemporary of Mallard painting...

Large Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas of Tulips Displayed in a Confit Jar.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.
