French post modern oil on board of a tablescape, tulips, carafe and three fruits. Signed Henri Chapignue and dated 1975.
An arresting and highly energetic painting. The artist has used bold, assertive, yet warm colours and applied the paint thickly, with great energy, using both brush and palette knife to give great texture and bring the subject to life.
Layers upon layers of paint give an impression of stained glass whereby the top fiery colours give way to and are muted by the underlying deeper tones.
This is a painting which packs a punch from a distance yet invites you to get close up and touch.
The painting has a post modern quality with its vibrant and expressive colours and forms. Elements of Cezanne are also visible here, not just in the composition but also the classic outlining of the fruit in darker tones and the rich background colours.
