G. Ralph Smith
Impressionist inspired abstract modern landscape painting w/ flowers, landscape

1970s

About the Item

This is a signed, original, mid-century modern abstract landscape oil painting with white flowers (roses) in an Henri Matisse / Pablo Picasso aesthetic by listed WPA artist, G. Ralph Smith. It is in excellent condition, framed in a modern wooden frame measuring 29” x 23”, and ready to hang. The painting itself measures 24" x 18". It comes from the artist's estate with estate stamp on the back. Smith demonstrates a fine handling of paint in this work – make sure to look at detail photos to get a sense of his elegant, bold brushwork. It is a fine example of Cubism-inspired American Modernism, created in the tradition of Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, Oscar Bluemner, and Arthur Dove, in the vein of Pablo Picasso. Predominantly teal green blue with accents of gray, red, violet, and white. G. Ralph Smith was a painter, illustrator and lithographer. He is perhaps best known for his regionalist lithographs from the 1930s and '40s, but devoted most of his life to producing oil paintings. Born in Circleville, OH, Smith graduated from the Columbus Art School in 1929 and went on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1937, he was awarded the Cresson Traveling Fellowship, which allowed him to travel through Europe for several months pursuing his art. In 1939 he married fellow PAFA graduate, Elizabeth Brehm Matos and settled in the Germantown section of Philadelphia where he would remain for the rest of his life. In the late 1930’s Smith collaborated with the German lithographer Theodore Cuno, known for his work with Joseph Pennell and Benton Spruance. They produced a series of twelve lithographs that typify the spirit of Philadelphia Regionalism during the Great Depression. Many of Smith’s paintings were inspired by trips to Rockport, MA from the late 1940’s to the late 1960’s as well as to Southern Maine and the picturesque Manayunk and Wissahickon areas of Philadelphia. On these trips he crafted boldly colored seascapes and landscapes. Smith’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions and can be found in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Art.

Real Fire: abstract painting w/ spray paint graffiti tag in red & black
By Mat Tomezsko
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of mixed media paintings uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Real Fire" depicts flames and fire above a segment of abstract forms in spray paint recalling street art and graffiti tags. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. Ash: geometric abstract mixed media painting w/ red flowers, fruit & black lines
By Mat Tomezsko
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of abstract mixed media paintings are constructed from traditional acrylic painting and the incorporation of ash into a hand-mixed paint of his own creation. This piece is part of a body of work that uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Ash" is a traditional still-life and landscape composition interrupted by broad black geometric chevron lines or "arrows" that divide the composition symmetrically in a geometric balance. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Seven Apples: abstract still life interior painting, red apples on green & gray
By Mat Tomezsko
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is an original sill life interior painting of fruit (apples) with a geometric fractured composition. The artist made the painting one section at a time. When working on one section, the artist would block off the rest of the composition so the objects and background needed to be placed again. By building the composition this way, the background and table appear at different levels and the shapes don't quite align. These imperfections convey a sense of passing time. In each section, the tone of the light changes, and the shadows switch directions. The apples and geometric shapes were chosen as much for metaphorical value as for aesthetics. A seemingly simple arrangement in a familiar painting genre contains a depth of observation, artistic choices, and interpretation. This painting is signed and dated on the back. Includes all hanging hardware and ready to install; no need for additional framing. Mat...

WAXING POETIC. encaustic landscape painting
By Sylvia Torres
Located in Palm Desert, CA
Waxing Poetic is an expression of lyrical Earthly beauty and serenity. Its title has the double meaning of both growing aesthetically and a nod to the painting medium used to create it, encaustic. This landscape draws on deep emotions in an imaginative and beautiful way, pleasing both the senses and the mind. It has a deeply felt beauty, and a calm oasis of serenities. Bands of gold tether the gentle blue heavens to the fertile soil of mother earth. The high notes and the low notes of color whisper to the senses, just as nature skillfully and poetically stirs the imagination and weaves tranquility together with a vibrant yet bold intimacy. Sylvia Torres, was born in California, one will find the ocean, sky and mountains reflected in her work. She also spent several years in Texas, where she attended the University of Houston, studied commercial art and became the Art Director at several advertising agencies. Eventually, the lure of California drew her back to California. Ms. Torres has been an instructor of art workshops at Idyllwild Arts, Carnegie Art Museum, Studio Channel Islands Art Center, Collage Artists Of America, the Ventura County Art Museum, University of California/Riverside, She has exhibited in solo and group shows including: Palm Springs Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Ventura Music Festival Invitational, Channel Islands Sanctuary, San Luis Obispo Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Marion Meyer Contemporary Art, Laguna Beach, CA, East/West One, Invitational, in Thousand Oaks, CA, Ventura Government Center Invitational, Ventura, CA.
