Frederick Stone Batcheller
Peaches in Cut Glass Dish

Circa 1870

About the Item

Pristine and purely American in its aesthetic due to the fact that the artist concentrates on one type of fruit. Europeans were much more opulent in their approach to still lifes and the American true to the time might depict just apples or plums and sometimes even just sitting on the table as opposed to fussy porcelains. The peaches are potentially a metaphor for honesty and purity. The artist chose a glass dish so he could be challenged to do a material you had to see through as well as being able to show the peaches in full. Early American still lives that are fairly academic and not primitive are hard to find. Few Americans were trained at this time as there were few teachers and one really had to go to Europe for that training. Batcheller seemed to do mostly still lifes but few appear in the market and almost none at auction that are as good as this one. It is in an exceptional Frederich Edwin Church frame of wonderful design and quality! This is a museum quality work and might be earlier than 1870 as well. Canvas inside frame measures 12 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches

Purple and White Iris

Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching. The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style. In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance! Estate of the artist Julian Eddy by 1962 Connecticut Gallery, Lyme CT...
