Christina Renfer Vogel
'Orange Tulips' - still life - floral, botanical, naturalism, bright colors

2023

About the Item

This painting features hues of purple, orange and green. Chattanooga-based artist Christina Renfer Vogel’s “Turning Towards the Sun” features paintings that reflect an intentional turn towards beauty in the face of the tension & uncertainty of recent years. Through nourishing periods of focused observation, she has allowed herself to delight in jubilant color, playful pattern & sensual gesture. Her works delight in the delicate unfurling of a tender leaf & the gentle turn towards an open window, as flowers seek warmth & stretch towards sunlight in the space of a painting session. “Bringing plants & flowers into my studio to serve as subjects - & companion - has been a kind of celebration of vibrant life & fleeting pleasure,” says Christina. “Working from direct observation requires close looking, & my attention has been rewarded with quiet stirrings. These works are small luxuries, defiant acts of care & gestures of hope." Christina holds an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Christina has participated in Artist residencies including the JSS in Civita program (Civita Castellana, Italy), the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts & the Vermont Studio Center. She is a recipient of a Lighton International Artists Exchange Program grant & an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant, among other awards. Christina currently serves as an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
