A successful still life communicates so much more than the appearance of an object in space, as is evident in the work of the Hudson Valley-based painter Carl Grauer. This image is from his "A QU(i)E(t)ER Interior" series, wherein the artist explores quietude and placemaking as a queer person.
“There are many ways to be queer, to be evocative, to be radical,” Grauer believes. “I tend to be a little quieter and more reserved in my own existence, showing through representation. Oftentimes, when you are queer and oppressed, you hide in and create safety in your own abode. To turn that and make it external—showing how we live, exhibiting our existence—it’s provocative.”
About the series:
In a new series titled Qu(i)e(t)er Interiors, Carl Grauer turns inward and brings us into an intimate space; his home. From a place of repose and safety, this environment provides warmth, comfort, and a stage to observe relationships among objects, beings, and the passage of light. His perspective tracks varied emotions, different points of view, and how the light is experienced by candlelight or sunlight reflected on walls and hardwood. “I found peace in observing the changes in light, and observing with slowness and mindfulness that comes during times of meditation.” Simple household objects are the subject of the rather complex compositions with layered perspectives. Grauer merges adept technical abilities with a penchant for authentic expression.
About the artist:
Carl Grauer is a painter based in Poughkeepsie, NY in the Hudson Valley. He primarily works in oil, painting mostly portraits and figure-based contemporary realistic paintings. Born in rural Kansas, Grauer left to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA in medical illustration from the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan, respectively. He spent two years in London studying figurative and portrait painting with several studios and has garnered success showing work nationally and internationally, including being shortlisted for the Wells Art Contemporary Award in the U.K., exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London, and having been granted several residencies including the Jentel Artist Residency in Banner, Wyoming.

This painting recalls the Dutch masters with its composition and soft application of paint. Sunlight streams in through the bedroom window, raking across a bed made up with white cotton sheets, and pooling onto the brown hard wood floor. This work is intimate, tranquil and is exquisite in its technical rendering.

This painting is an exquisite example of the artist's unique ability to capture the very whimsical side of nature. Widely known for painting expansive views of the Hudson Valley where the artist often embarks on extensive hiking trails, Konigsberg also takes to painting more intimate and commonplace household objects. A coffee pot, salt and pepper shaker, or as in this case, a simple bouquet of long stemmed pink peonies careening over the side of a green vase; his use of oil washes capture both fluidity and structure. The fanciful treatment of the flowers calls to mind French Impressionist Toulouse Latrec...

Deborah Windsor, Still Life on a White Tablecloth, Original Still Life Painting
Located in Deddington, GB
'Still Life on a White Tablecloth' is an original painting by Deborah Windsor. It is a delightful small vases of summer flowers, a cactus and other objects sit on a crisp white tablecloth in this large Still Life painting. Contained in an elegant white frame this painting would look beautiful in a large kitchen or living room.
Deborah Windsor, painter and printmaker, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. Deborah grew up in the Kent countryside surrounded by animals and nature and started painting with her mother who was a portrait painter at a very young age. After art college Deborah co-founded a ran a successful ceramic design business in Portobello Road, London, designing, making and selling contemporary ceramics and undertaking commissions for well know media clients. Moving back to Kent in her thirties Deborah taught art and returning to painting, her first love, developed her still-life painting style. Deborah works in oil and acrylics building up her paintings with layers and washes to achieve depth and richness. Pattern, texture, decoration, shapes and colour are all important elements in her work. Working from life is vital to Deborah so that she can capture the essence of her subject. Jugs and vases spill over with fresh flowers and she will often paint part of one of her abstract paintings in the background to add an extra element to the composition. Deborah’s work features vintage china and fabrics from her collections which with her mainly gentle colour palette give her work a homely, peaceful feeling. Deborah now lives with her husband Vincent and their ginger cat in part of a converted Victorian...
