About the Item

Born in London to Scottish parents, Peter Howson (b. 1958) has spent much of his life in Scotland and attended the Glasgow School of Art, receiving tutelage from Sandy Moffat. Religious themes run throughout Howson’s work, especially linked to his conversion to Christianity and treatment for addiction in 2000. In fact, Howson’s very first painting at the age of six was of the crucifixion. He never shied away from depicting pain within his art; he was the official British war artist in 1993 during the Bosnian War. He also created a British postage stamp in 1999, in addition to creating album art for multiple bands. Now, Howson’s artworks reside in many collections around the world, including the Hunterian Art Gallery, Guildhall Gallery, National Galleries of Scotland, and Fitzwilliam Museum.

"What he was doing in the mid-1960s in many ways changed the course of Scottish painting,” Keith Hartley, the senior curator of the Scottish National Gallery, has said of Bellany’s importance. “It was like a manifesto: I don't want to do paintings for Edinburgh drawing...
