Oluwafemi Afolabi
You May Be Lucky

2022

About the Item

Love, with its intense emotions and vulnerabilities, has long been a subject of exploration in art. The artwork titled "You May Be Lucky," created by the talented artist Oluwafemi Afolabi, delves into the intricate nature of love and the risks it entails. The centerpiece of this piece is a woman delicately holding a bouquet of flowers, while the artist's choice of words, "There is no intensity of love or feeling that does not involve the risk of crippling hurt. It is a duty to take this risk, to love and feel without defense or reserve 'Never was anything great achieved without danger,'" underscores the profound message of the artwork. Love has the remarkable ability to uplift and inspire, but it also exposes us to the potential for heartache and pain. Afolabi's artwork acknowledges this duality, highlighting the inherent risk involved in opening ourselves up to love fully. The artist emphasizes that the depth of love and feeling is intertwined with the possibility of experiencing profound hurt. It is a courageous act to embrace love without defense or reserve, exposing our vulnerabilities in the pursuit of a genuine connection. The bouquet of flowers held by the woman in the artwork serves as a poignant symbol. Flowers have long been associated with love, passion, and beauty. They represent the fragile and ephemeral nature of human emotions, just as flowers wither and fade over time. The bouquet signifies the gift of love, offering both beauty and vulnerability. The words accompanying the artwork further emphasize the artist's message. They suggest that despite the potential for hurt, it is our duty to take the risk, as great achievements are rarely accomplished without venturing into dangerous territory. Afolabi encourages viewers to recognize the value of embracing love's vulnerability, understanding that it is through such risks that we can experience profound connections and personal growth. Afolabi's artistry shines through in "You May Be Lucky." The meticulous attention to detail and the delicate brushstrokes convey a sense of gentleness and vulnerability. The woman's posture and expression reflect a mix of hope, anticipation, and a touch of apprehension, capturing the complex emotions that love can evoke. The artist's use of color adds depth to the artwork. The bouquet of flowers, vibrant and alive, stands out against a muted background, symbolizing the contrasts and complexities of love itself. The interplay of light and shadows further enhances the emotional depth of the piece, evoking a sense of both warmth and vulnerability. "You May Be Lucky" serves as a reminder that love is not without risks, yet it is in embracing these risks that we find the potential for genuine connections and personal fulfillment. Afolabi's artwork urges viewers to approach love with courage and openness, to accept the vulnerability that comes with it, and to recognize that great achievements often require stepping into the unknown. “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound of mind.” Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. She closed her eyes #7 Zahra Zeinali 21st Century Iranian painting child world
By Zahra Zeinali
Located in Paris, FR
Acrylic paint on canvas Signed on the back Zahra ZEINALI was born in 1975 in Tehran, Iran. From 2001 to 2004, she studied Fine arts at the Art and Architecture University in Tehran. At the same time, she taught visual arts to children during 15 years. Passionate about photography, she trained in photography in 2007 at the House of Photography in Tehran. In 2012, she moved to France. Confronted with her new life, her vision of the world changed. Since 2020, she has resumed training in photography at the EFET School in Paris. Zahra ZEINALI The Doll’s House “What can a true artistic temperament aspire to after a youth spent in Iran today? To flee the hassles, prejudices, restrictions, to open wide a window of freedom rich in potentialities that were believed for a long time inaccessible. Zahra Zeinali became a visual arts teacher for fifteen years. Her pupils are 6 to 12 years old. Drawing, sculpture, painting, model design, she taught them a great diversity of techniques, but above all to think and design freely by themselves, in an atmosphere of joyful creative disorder which, surprisingly, is tolerated by a careful hierarchy. Then she studied four years at the University of Art and Architecture in Tehran. When she arrived in France, after a brief abstract period inspired by the rhythms of nature, it was at the time of the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, which marked her deeply, to the point of lastingly darkening the ideal of emancipation and autonomy that she had projected on her stay in Paris. "There is no paradise on earth" she concluded with a melancholy smile. An old doll, bought for 1 euro in a storage room, triggers a click in her. The bitter imprint left by the Iranian confinement, the memory of her fifteen years of teaching visual arts to children, the loneliness of her Parisian exile, all this sentimental nebula found a plastic metaphor in the image of the doll. This is what these delicate earthenware faces evoke, often abused, abandoned, the childish innocence of their ingenuous gazes, a sort of strange absence from the world of the living, as if their attenuated life took place behind the mystery of a theater curtain...
