Rewflections I

About the Item

From the beginning, Jacoby’s approach to the canvas has been fearless, following a method akin to the way the subconscious or even unconscious works. She manifests everyday life, positioning and repositioning themes and tableaus – (the dinner table, a child in the vast outdoors, lovers, immersion in water, flight) in ways that allow for exploration of a singular identity, very separate, as a woman and artist. Fears and dreams are codified in scenes with an uncanny precision and power beyond words. These new works by Jacoby represent a leap in the artist’s painterly powers. Flecks of color inhabit the canvases in rhythmic patterns that permeate both the background and the central action of the painting, creating a unified field of energy - a tone that further informs the content of the work. She is able to integrate the figures with their environment by the use of carefully modulated strokes of pure color. In View I , for example, the seated child is both observer and an essential element of nature - not apart from it. In other works, sections of the canvas are sparse and purely abstract, giving an emphasis and heat to the primary action in the painting, whether it is the loving embrace in works like Jacket and Love, or the stark vulnerability and exposure to the elements in the enigmatic Memory.

Portrait de Frederique Regamey - Oil Paint by Alphonse Legros - 1859
By Alphonse Legros
Located in Roma, IT
Portrait d'Homme is an artwork realized by the french artist Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) in 1859. Oil on Canvas. Good conditions except some rips on the edges. Broche du nº 23 du catalogue Malassis-Thibaudeau "Portrait de Frederique Regamey". Collection Thibaudeau. Alphonse Legros was born on May 8, 1837 in Dijon, France. While young, Legros visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his works. He was sent to the art school at Dijon with a view to qualifying for a trade, and was apprenticed to an interior decorator. In 1851, Legros left for Paris, but passing through Lyon he worked for six months as journeyman muralist for painter/art restorer Jean-Baptiste Beuchot, who was painting the chapel of Cardinal Bonald in the cathedral. In Paris, Legros studied with theater scene painter Charles-Antoine. He attended also the drawing-school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran (the "Petite école") where he found made friends with Jules Dalou and Auguste Rodin. In 1855, he attended the evening classes of the École des Beaux Arts.Legros sent two portraits to the Paris Salon of 1857: one was rejected, and formed part of the exhibition of protest organized by Francois Bonvin in his studio; the other, which was accepted, was a profile portrait of his father. Art critic Champfleury saw the work in the Salon, and sought out the artist to enlist him in the "Realists," a group anchored by Gustave Courbet.Legros picked up the art of etching by watching a colleague in Paris who worked as a commercial engraver, and taught himself both etching and medallion making. He considered the traditional journey to Italy an important part of artistic training, and in later years, gave part of his salary to augment the income available for a travelling internship. He moved to England in 1863 and in 1864 married Frances Rosetta Hodgson. In his early career, he lived from the sales of his etchings and teaching. He began teaching etching at the South Kensington School of Art and in 1876 became a Slade Professor at University College, London, succeeding Edward Poynter...

portrait of a man
By Elie Shamir
Located in Surfside, FL
The painter Elie Shamir was born in 1953 in the village Kfar Yehoshua, studied at Bezalel, and participated in many exhibitions in Israel and abroad. This exhibition centers on Shamir’s work dealing with his birthplace. After years spent in Jerusalem and Boston, Shamir returned to the village in 1999 and resettled there, as the third generation of the place’s founders. The issue of place is present with great force and complexity in Shamir’s work; aspects of this issue pertain, among others, to that tangled knot which is tied and unraveled throughout the generations between the Jew and the land, between the immigrant and the native-born, between the local Arab and the Hebrew pioneer and his vision, between the farmer and his field. The clumps of earth in Shamir’s paintings are placed on geological strata charged with biblical past, with primeval culture, with Zionist history, with socio-economic ideology, with artistic tradition but also with his own personal family story. Kfar Yehoshua is both a personal, specific case of an agriculturBorn 1953, Kfar Yehoshua, Israel Education 1981 BFA, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem 1996 MA, Based on exhibitions and publications Selected Group Exhibition 1986 "The First Line", Museum of Art, Ein Harod, Ein Harod.
