Amy Devlin portrays people, animals, or nature in her works. But what really matters to her is light and water, which she wants to capture in the form of a physical memory. Her paintings show a fascination with the movement and texture of water, which is depicted in vivid colors in her works. Her hybrid painting style combines realism with impressionism in a very interesting way, providing a different view of the world and our memories of it. Devlin loves the unexpected, looks at things from a crazy angle and imagines. Since 2014 she mainly paints underwater portraits.
After her painting style had remained very realistic, almost photographic, for many years, Amy Devlin has recently developed a more expressive, looser style. She brings the bodies in the water to the foreground and abstracts the light blue water. Nevertheless, the image is still clearly recognizable, although the color palette differs completely from previous works. The artist uses the supple compliance of oil paint, which, in combination with her unconventional color choice: bright neon colors, gives a special effect. She believes that everything from nature is never one color. These consist of all kinds of textures, shadows and light. Her goal is to achieve this layered effect with complex and bold color compositions.
Devlin grew up in New Zealand and has now lived in the United Kingdom for over twenty years. She lives and works in the Kent countryside since 2015. In her studio in her beautiful garden, she surrenders to the creative process.

Amy Devlin, painter, is available for sale online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Paint has always been my favourite medium, and I feel very lucky to be able to do something I truly enjoy. I love the detail in life - a person, an animal, a shaft of light through water, the ever changing clouds. Working in oils I try to recreate a physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture the solitude and tranquillity of water or skies by combining realism with impressionistic brushstrokes. Working from your photographs, I can produce high quality paintings of people or pets. For underwater commissions I am able to organise rental of an underwater camera to take on holiday with you to capture amazing underwater images. These unique pieces are a great gift idea or the perfect way to bring a memory to life.
